From the Desk of Sondra Oster Baras
Israel and the Earthquake ...
Sondra Oster Baras
I have just returned from a three-week speaking tour in Australia and New Zealand.  It was my first time "down under" and it was a wonderful visit.  Everywhere I went, audiences were eager to hear about Israel and were particularly interested in learning more about the settlement movement.  We have new friends for Israel!

Given that this was such a new and different sort of trip, I thought I would share some of my experiences and feelings throughout with you, a diary of sorts.  I hope you will find it meaningful.

My first stop was Melbourne.  My son is one of 8 young adults from Israel, 4 men and 4 women, who have been sent to Melbourne to work with the Jewish youth, both in school, in the religious Zionist youth movement, and in a variety of extra-curricular activities.  Their primary goal is to deepen the relationship of these young people with the Bible and with
G-d and ultimately inspire them to commit themselves to a full Jewish life in Israel.  Their job is not an easy one, as the influences of a larger, very secular society are evident everywhere.  But these young people are doing a great job!

I was particularly excited by two events that I was part of - a Thursday night Bible study followed by a stew-eating fest.  The stew was an extra incentive to get more people to the Bible Study and when I heard about it, I offered to make the stew.  It was a hit!  And on Shabbat afternoon, my son and his friends invited dozens of young adults to their apartment for a Shabbat afternoon sing-along.  I made brownies for that gathering and derived enormous satisfaction from seeing these people gather to sing praises to G-d as the sun was setting on a wonderful Shabbat day.  I hope and pray that their enthusiasm and love for G-d and His Torah will remain a lasting influence in their lives.

I had three speaking engagements in Melbourne, one of which was hosted by Rev. Mark Durie of St. Mary's Anglican Church.  Rev. Durie has published books and lectured extensively on the dangers of Islam to both Christians and Jews and his perspective and scholarship are truly impressive.  We had the chance to chat privately before the meeting and I was glad to be able to bring a message from Israel to his congregation.

Community of the Month
This Month CFOIC is Focusing on Gush Katif...
Gush Katif refugee demonstrates with a sign that reads,
"The heartbreaking story of Gush Katif is not over. Thankfully, much progress has been made and finally, after more than 5 years, we are beginning to see them settle into homes and communities and once again become successful, contributing members of society.

However, there are still those who need our help. We have an opportunity to enable those people from Gush Katif who are still unemployed or underemployed, to find a job or open a new business. This program provides job training so that they can support their families with dignity.

Your gift this month to help the Gush Katif Employment Project, will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Israeli government, so in essence your donation is doubled! Please join me in blessing the people of Gush Katif with hope for their future."

Go to our website and read more in PDF about the impact that this community has on Israel.
