Iran: regime hits out at apostasy — 70 arrested

Ethnic Armenian and Assyrian Orthodox Churches in Iran may exist in peace as long as they do not proselytise (i.e. seek converts). It is illegal to preach Christianity in Farsi (the Persian language) just as it is illegal for Muslims to reject Islam (apostasy). The penalty for apostasy is death. So when Muslim Farsi-speaking Iranians convert to Christianity, they must meet and worship in illegal ‘underground’ fellowships.

Early on 25 & 26 December 2010 armed plainclothed agents from the infamous Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) raided the homes of Christians known to be converts from Islam and/or active in witnessing to Muslims. As well as confiscating CDs, Bibles, religious books, computers and personal documents, they arrested 25 Christians. Sixteen other Christians listed for arrest were not home at the time of the raids and remain unaccounted for. Further to this there are unconfirmed reports that as many as 50 other mostly young believers have since been arrested. Amongst those detained are five married couples, one of whom has been separated from their two-year-old child and another from their breast-feeding infant. The detained Christians are being interrogated and coerced. Eleven have since been released after signing documents promising to refrain from Christian activity. The detained believers are virtually all converts from Islam.

The governor of Tehran province, Morteza Tamadon, describes Protestants and evangelicals as ‘corrupt and deviant’ and also accuses them of conducting an ‘enemy cultural invasion’. ‘The leaders of this movement,’ he declared, ‘have been arrested in Tehran province and more will be arrested in the near future. Just like the Taliban, who have inserted themselves into Islam like a parasite, [evangelicals] have crafted a movement with Britain’s backing in the name of Christianity. But their conspiracy was unveiled quickly and the first blows were delivered to them.’

This Week in History: The Jews of Basel are burnt

On January 9, 1349, nearly the entire Jewish population of Basel was massacred by townspeople as Jews were blamed for the Black Plague.

Talkbacks (7) At the end of the 14th century in Europe, scores were dying from the Black Plague and nobody knew why. That is, until a scapegoat was found. On January 9, 1349, nearly the entire Jewish population of Basel was massacred by the townspeople. Ignorant to the causes of the plague, the people and local leaders of modern Switzerland, France and Germany accused Jews of poisoning wells. Most were burnt alive.

There were many factors that converged to turn the Jews into the perfect scapegoat for a plague now believed to have spread from China. Anti-Semitism had been a problem for Jews in Europe long before the plague worsened their fate. In the centuries leading up to the Basel massacre, the Church enforced laws similar to the Nuremberg laws seen over half-a-millennium later. Jews were barred from working as weavers, shoemakers, carpenters, miners and bakers, among other professions. As a result of these racist laws, Jews often worked as money lenders, a practice that lead to public resentment against them and may have contributed to the events of 1349. Another law, passed in 1215 by Pope Innocent III was particularly similar to those passed by Nazi Germany in the 20th century – Jews were required to wear a yellow badge at all times.

Despite the general anti-Semitism present at the time, the massacre in Basel can be more accurately ascribed to specific accusations against the Jews in relation to the plague; it was alleged that Jews were suffering and dying from the Black Plague at a much lower rate than Christians. It is not clear if this was actually true, but there are several theories explaining the apparent phenomenon. One theory suggests that Jews buried their dead much more quickly than Christians and in separate cemeteries, thus making their deaths less visible. Another theory speculates that Passover was responsible for saving a great portion of the Jewish population. According to Dr. Martin Blaser, as reported by The New York Times, the clearing of hametz (leavened bread) from homes ahead of Passover deprived rats of food and shelter, helping to stymie the disease’s spread. He adds that the plague peaked in the spring, around the time that Passover would have fallen.

In this week’s 5 minute update, we focused on several things:

1) The current status of the Israel / PLO peace process
2) The US economy in 2011

The US is displeased with Israel Defense Minister Ehud Barak that he hasn’t been able to persuade PM Benjamin Netanyahu since April 2009 to agree to a PLO state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He will no longer receive preferential treatment in relations with the USA. The US has already shown its displeasure toward Benjamin Netanyahu in the past year in a variety of ways. This makes it increasingly likely that the USA will promote policies which are anti-Israel in the near future. Because of the present stalemate in talks, the US will have to decide in the coming weeks how they should approach the next steps. Will they present their own peace agreement? Will they endorse a PLO state based upon 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital in the United Nations? Will they endorse the condemnation of Israel building in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the United Nations? The PLO have given the USA maps of their view of a PLO state. However, the USA has been unsuccessful in convincing Israel to put on the table its view of the borders of a future PLO state. Tony Blair representing the Quartet (US, EU, Russian and the UN) told Israel that the international community only has weeks and not months to restart peace talks. The EU’s foreign minister Catherine Ashton suggests there needs to be a Quartet meeting in early February regarding the peace process. Meanwhile, there are calls for the US to impose their own peace plan upon Israel and the PLO. This has been suggested by Howard Sachar in an article in the current issue of “Foreign Affairs” magazine which is the magazine of the Council of Foreign Relations. This view is also stated in the current issue of the “Economist” magazine. David Makovsky who is the director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy which is a Washington think-tank to promote the views of the US in foreign policy is reportedly ready to present suggested maps for the borders of a PLO state in late January. The PLO is planning to have their draft resolution to condemn Israel building in the West Bank and East Jerusalem submitted to the UN Security Council in the coming week. They are also calling upon the Quartet to submit their own imposed peace plan. Meanwhile, Chile announced its recognition of a PLO based upon 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. Netanyahu says that he is willing to talk with Abbas as long as it takes to reach a peace agreement. However, he says that the PLO must modify their position regarding recognizing Israel as a Jewish state, dropping their demand for a Palestinian refugee “right of return” and be flexible with security arrangements with Israel on the ground. If there isn’t a possibility of reaching a peace agreement by this March or April, the Labor party (13 seats) is threatening to leave the coalition government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

An agreement to divide Jerusalem and establish a PLO state is a tribulation event.

The US National debt is now over $14 Trillion dollars. If all of this debt was refinanced at 5% then it would cost $700 billion dollars a year in interest. If all of this debt was refinanced at 10% then it would cost $1.4 Trillion a year in interest. The US cannot afford interest rates over 5% anymore because it will endanger that the US government could go bankrupt.

A collapse of the US dollar and the establishment of one world currency is a tribulation event.

From a Biblical prophetic perspective, the reason why the God of Israel would allow these events to happen is because it will result in the end of the exile of the house of Jacob and the reunification of the 12 tribes of Israel (Ephraim and Judah).

We will to be “watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem” and we will not rest until the God of Israel makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth (Isaiah 62).

Way Stations  Lift Up a Standard! Help Guide Our People Home! Shalom,     Way Stations are a concept that we developed years ago to help Believers share their faith about Israel's full restoration. Way Stations serve as guideposts in that they are supply stations for those who want to know more about their Israelite heritage. They can help us declare the truth about MIA's "Inclusion Theology." We teach the opposite of Replacement Theology with "Inclusion Theology." We agree with the Apostle Paul, James, and our Messiah, who all taught that the Jewish people are part of Israel, but they do not represent all of Israel. In Paul's letters he speaks of a "greater Israel" (Rom 11. Eph 2, Gal 3).       We believe that the seed of Abraham has, over the last 3000 years, become like the stars of heaven and the sands of the sea. As prophesied in the book of Hosea, this seed, these heirs of promise, rebelled, were scattered, lost their identity, but in this hour, they and their companions are being reawakened and restored. To aid in this restoration, Way Stations are outposts that serve as a distribution network for Messianic Israel information. Through them we can offer materials, such as books, articles, music and audio CD's and viddeo DVD's.       Our primary means of "advertising" has been, is, and will always be, "word of mouth." As we exited 2010, the weekly Torah portion led us into the Book of Exodus (i.e., exiting). I'm just now remembering that God whispered into my heart that He is ushering us into a desert-exodus experience this year. I believe God is leading America into a desert of sorts. We're not to worry because God's intent is for our good and not for our harm. I do not think this desert wilderness will last 40 years but I do know it is intended to TEST us. Needless to say, we're at the brink of tests that come in the form of mighty shakings. Exodus 16:4-5 says, "Then the LORD said to Moses, 'I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.'" Please note, God is saying that He wants 'to see whether we will follow His instruction' and directives. In other words, the good news is that He wills to instruct and direct us if we let Him. We have nothing to loose if we do and all to loose if we don't. Exodus 20:20 says that Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning." His tests are intended to keep us from sinning any more. In other words, God's intent is to STOP US from sinning-because we have sinned pretty miserably. God's test includes no less than two things. First, God is taking our "toys" away from us. Secondly, God is requiring more than our good efforts-He is demanding sacrifice. Let me explain. God is stripping us, including our government from the toys that have consumed much of our attention, money and time. God is stripping us of our pet projects which kept us too busy from truly listening and depending on Him. We've become addicted to the little toys that keep us so busy on an individual and a national basis. We see this in the news every single day-how God is stripping our government from material things we took for granted which led to mismanagement of God's resources. This is sending shock waves all across our nation and also affecting all nations of the world. And He isn't through with us yet. Secondly, God is requiring real sacrifices from each and every American citizen. Situations that we could previously accomplish with some good effort will no longer work this year. God has led us to the point where we must go way above and beyond the very best efforts we could ever engage in. God is expecting us to make real sacrifices in order to attain His best for us and for our nation. Psalms 51:16-17 reads: "You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." In other words, God will no longer endure what we called our personal sacrifices which became nothing more than route and routine. He is requiring the sacrifices of a "broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart. . ." This sounds much like that which God spoke to King Solomon in 2 Chronicles 7:14: ". . .if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." Now this is what I call sacrifice in this day and age in our nation-willingness to humble ourselves, a real commitment to pray and truly seek God's face and to turn from our "wicked ways." But this shouldn't be a sacrifice if we hadn't become such a proud and arrogant people. The epitome of the sacrifice God's calling for is captured in Psalm 50:5 which says, "Gather to me my consecrated ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice." God doesn't want another temporary or provisional commitment. He wants a permanent and irreversible covenant with Him which can take place only by our daily and personal sacrifice. This is the only way that, individually, we'll press beyond the insurmountable obstacles that lay before us. And this is also the only way that our nation might possibly remain as the number-one nation in the world. Failure to do this only spells our nation's bankruptcy. And if our nation goes down, most Americans will go down too. Conversely, if most Americans go down, we'll pull our entire nation along with us too. So it is that we do not need a new set of toys and addicting pet projects to keep us busy or entertained. We need 2 Chronicles 7:14 to become our daily prayer and action. We need to contract every muscle within our being to sacrifice itself so that we might finally achieve God's purpose and destiny for us and for our nation. In conclusion, the title for the first Torah reading for the New Year reads: "And I appeared." I earnestly believe that if we follow the 2 Chronicles 7:14 formula set by The Almighty, He shall appear to our nation once again. I believe God will "hear from heaven and will forgive (our) sin and will heal (our) land" -and this begins with you and me today.
