| | From the Desk of Sondra Oster Baras Our Presence In Israel Will Prevail... In recent weeks, we have seen the Palestinian Authority pursue a totally new direction in its relationship with the international community. While consistently refusing to meet Israel at the negotiating table, it has pursued unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood around the world. To date, a number of South American countries, including Brazil and Argentina, have recognized "Palestine" in the so-called 1967 borders that are in the areas of Judea and Samaria occupied by Jordan between 1949 and 1967. The European Union has responded to Palestinian overtures of this nature by responding that it intends to recognize "Palestine" at some future time.
While many have expressed concern regarding the ramifications of this new movement towards unilateral recognition, news of this development has been received in Israel with relative apathy. While I am sure that the professionals in Israel's Foreign Ministry are working overtime to develop appropriate responses and while Prime Minister Netanyahu is certainly consulting with his advisors as to his next strategy, the average Israeli has welcomed this with a decided yawn. After all, we are here, in the land, and recognition or not, we are not planning on going anywhere, anytime soon. Certainly the vast majority of the Israeli people are not willing to have any entity other than Israel control a land area in the center of our country!
Many Israeli commentators have noted that the result of international recognition of a State of Palestine in the 1967 borders means that Jews living in these same areas, specifically in the Jewish communities of Judea and Samaria, are considered illegal and illegitimate. As a resident of Samaria, myself, I can't help but question how my presence in this area could be considered illegal. I did not steal land from anyone. Indeed, I built my home on the basis of a ground lease that I signed with the Israeli government, the legal administrator of all public land in Judea and Samaria. Even if the State of Palestine were to come into existence, why does that mean, a priori, that all Jews living in that state are illegal?

| | Community of the Month This Month CFOIC is Focusing on Emanuel...
"As I read about the children of Emanuel, my heart went out to these children. They are truly in need of a Christian Friend. Together we can raise the necessary funds so that each one will have an opportunity to overcome their individual difficulties. They will be able to achieve their full potential and become contributing members of society as they grow into adulthood. With your donation this month for the community of Emanuel, we will accomplish so much. It can often feel overwhelming to contemplate the enormous poverty suffered by so many all over the world, and it seems as if there is never enough to solve all of the problems. On the other hand, we know that every little bit does help! You can make a difference in the lives of the children of Emanuel." Go to our website and read more in PDF about the impact that this community has on Israel.Your donation will help cover Emanuel's Child Development Center costs. |
