Dear,
Please say a prayer for the people of Sudan. The crucial referendum on independence for Southern Sudan begins today.
My Washington Post ''On Faith'' blog tells you more about the importance of this vote, especially as it impacts African Christians in Sudan.
When you read my article, you'll see this is very much an issue of Christians and Muslims. For decades, Sudan's African Christians have been terrorized by the Islamic government of the North. This is a vote on human rights, religious freedom, women's rights, and self-determination.
And it's a referendum in which you played a role. American Christians mobilized to support the Christians of Sudan, and this is their moment to embrace freedom.
Sadly, Sudanese President Bashir said recently that if the South votes for independence, ''We'll change the Constitution. Shariah and Islam will be the main source for the Constitution, Islam the official religion and Arabic the official language.''1
This is a very ominous and disturbing statement.
And read more about it in my blog, then post your comment online. You will need to register with the Post, but it's free - and your participation will let people know that you care about Sudan and you want more media coverage of issues like this.
Thank you for your prayers for Sudan. Voting begins today.
Sincerely,
Jordan Sekulow

JUBA, Sudan — President Omar Hassan al-Bashir promised Sunday to turn Sudan into a state governed by Islamic law if the south chooses to secede in a referendum next month.
“We’ll change the Constitution,” he said in a televised speech. “Shariah and Islam will be the main source for the Constitution, Islam the official religion and Arabic the official language.”
The comments were some of Mr. Bashir’s strongest words to date seeming to acknowledge the likelihood of an independent southern Sudanese state and outlining his vision for the northern half, which would stay under his control.
