In this week’s 5 minute update, we focused on:
1) The current status of the Israel / PLO peace process
The reason why there was no Quartet statement from the July 11 meeting on the peace process is because the US wanted to include language that Israel supported to restart peace talks. This language included positions that President Bush wrote in a letter to Israel Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2004 regarding the settlement blocs.
However, the other Quartet members along with the PLO opposed this language. Because there was no agreement among the Quartet members, no statement was made.
Because of a threat of a US veto at the UN Security Council for recognition of a PLO state, the PLO is considering only asking the UN General Assembly to recognize a PLO state based upon 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. However, other sources indicate that the PLO will go forward with plans to seek recognition of a PLO state through the UN Security Council. The PLO will continue to talk with the US about changing their position. Hamas opposes the efforts of the PLO to work with the UN. Israel announced plans to build over 300 new building units in two West Bank settlements. The EU said that they were opposed to the plan.
An agreement to divide Jerusalem and establish a PLO state is a tribulation event.
