Today 1,942 year annaversary to the breaching of Walls of Jerusalem

  Today the 17th of Tamuz, 1,942 years ago the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the   Romans and a bloody battle ensued for the next 3 weeks until the Temple Mount was burned to the ground.

As we get closer to the date of the destruction of the Temple, our mourning increases. From the 17th of Tamuz till the 1st of Av we do not get hair cuts or listen to live music. From the 1st of Av till the 8th of Av the mourning increases as we also do not drink wine or eat meat or bath for pleasure. For Jews of Middle Eastern Descent these extra acts of mourning do not start till the week of the 9th of Av itself . On the 9th of Av we fast 24 hours from sunset to sunset (no food or drink), we do not wear leather shoes, bath at all, wear perfumes and marital relations are all strictly forbidden. Source:
