At a press conference at the company's Palo Alto headquarters, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg this morning unveiled plans to add Skype-based video chat service to the company's service.
The addition of video chat is part of an overhaul of the company's group chat service. Zuckerberg says more than half of the user base uses Facebook groups. You can already form a group and have a chat; a new feature will make it easy to do ad hoc group chat. They're also doing a new design for chat to make chat easier to use.
But clearly, the day's really big news is video calling via Facebook. That makes sense, given that Microsoft, a long-time investor in Facebook, is in the process of buying Skype.
If you and your friend are online and on Facebook, you can launch a video chat with one click, although it does require a quick download of an applet.
Skype CEO Tony Bates said at the event that paid versions of the service could also eventually be offered on Facebook.
