1.  The Lord's Feasts BeginRosh HaShanah - this year beginning Wednesday evening, September 28 through Friday, September 30 - is the first of the three fall (autumn) feasts, also called the High Holy Days. Rosh HaShana means "head of the year" and is the Jewish New Year, even though the Bible calls it the seventh month.

The Jewish world has two calendars, a civil one and a religious one. The civil year begins at Passover (around April). The religious year begins on Rosh HaShana, and all Jewish calendars start in September.

Biblically, Rosh HaShanah is called "Yom Teruah" (the day of the sounding of trumpets). The Bible tells us very little about it (see Lev. 23:23-25), so most of today's practices are based on tradition. Because it is the first of the fall (autumn) feasts, rabbis saw it as a spiritual new year and began to call it Rosh HaShanah.

This is the day of the blowing of the shofar (ram's horn). It is a wake-up call to the nation concerning personal repentance so that the new year can begin with a clean slate. Restitution is made and all wrongs are made right because it is believed that it is on this day that God judges every man as to whether or not his name will be written in the Book of Life for another year.

There are no fireworks or rowdy parties like the world's New Year's Eve on December 31; instead Jewish people look inward and get their lives in order. This goes far beyond writing down a list of resolutions.

Beginning 30 days ahead, the shofar is blown up to 100 times. The last trumpet sounded is called the great "tekiah," one long blast blown for as long as the trumpeter can do so. Since the shofar is blown at the beginning of each of the seven feast months and this trumpet blast is blown on the seventh month, it is known as the "last trump."

As with all Jewish holidays, there are special foods eaten on this day. The foods eaten on Rosh Hashanah are symbolic. Sweet foods are eaten, usually apples dipped in honey, to indicate the desire for a sweet year. Round foods are eaten to symbolize the cycle of the year, and there is always an abundance of food, symbolizing hope for fruitfulness and prosperity. Fish, cooked with the head left on, is often the main course, symbolizing the head of the year.

The ten days following Rosh HaShanah until Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), are called the Ten Days of Awe. These ten days are a time of further introspection - a time of searching the soul and making everything right between you and your God, as well as your fellow man.

We greet all our friends, Christians and Jews alike, with the traditional greeting for the new year: "L'shanah tovah tichatevu" (May you be inscribed for a good year), a desire for our names to be written in the Book of Life.

Hag Same'ach (Happy Holiday) from Bridges for Peace!

2.  Netanyahu to Abbas: "Let's Meet Today"United Nations - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday [September 23] called on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to meet with him immediately in the United Nations - an offer delivered minutes after Abbas gave a harsh, distorted, hate-filled address to the U.N. General Assembly.

"I continue to hope that President Abbas will be my partner for peace," the Israeli prime minister said, after Abbas presented a bid for full membership in the United Nations. "We have to stop negotiating about the negotiations. Let's just get on with it. Let's negotiate peace."

"Now we're in the same city. We're in the same building. So let's meet here today, in the United Nations. Who's there to stop us? What is there to stop us? Let's listen to one another. I'll tell you my concerns. You'll tell me yours, and with God's help we'll find a common ground for peace. I cannot make peace alone. I cannot make peace without you."

At the end of an eventful day, the Mideast Quartet of the United States, Russia, European Union and United Nations issued a joint statement calling on the parties to return to negotiations without preconditions and to reach peace quickly. It proposed convening a preparatory meeting within a month to lay out the agenda and timeframe for a final agreement, which would be not later than the end of 2012.

"The Quartet expects the parties to come forward with comprehensive proposals within three months on territory and security, and to have made substantial progress within six months. To that end, the Quartet will convene an international conference in Moscow, in consultation with the parties, at the appropriate time," the statement said.

Earlier Friday, Abbas submitted his application for U.N. membership knowing that he lacked the votes to bring the matter to the Security Council. He said he was armed with only their hopes and dreams - which brought a quick response from Netanyahu. "Yes, hopes and dreams and 10,000 missiles and Grad rockets supplied by Iran," Netanyahu said, referring to the vast arsenal of weapons built up by Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza and frequently fired at Israeli civilians.

The speeches of the two leaders presented a stark contrast. Abbas blamed the failure of the peace process entirely on Israel. He said he would not return to negotiations unless Israel froze building in the territories. Israel is ready to renew negotiations immediately - without preconditions.

Abbas shocked many observers with the harshness of his speech. He stated that the future Palestine should include East Jerusalem, including the city's Jewish Quarter and the Western Wall, the holiest site in Judaism. And he called for a return to the 1967 lines - which security experts say are impossible to defend. Abbas also mentioned that he came from the Holy Land, a place holy to Muslims and Christians. He totally omitted any mention of Jewish links to the land of the Bible.

In his 40-minute speech, Abbas also said he would not recognize Israel as a Jewish state. He condemned the security fence that has saved countless lives, both Palestinian and Jewish, as a "racist annexation wall." He called for the release of terrorists held in Israeli jails. He even condemned archaeology that has uncovered much evidence of the ancient Jewish kingdoms of Israel and Judea.

Netanyahu recalled that Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza in 2005, as urged by the international community. "We didn't freeze settlements in Gaza. We uprooted them," he said. "We uprooted thousands of people from their homes. We bulldozed synagogues. We even uprooted loved ones from their graves. And having done that, we gave the keys of Gaza to President Abbas. We didn't get peace. We got Iran. The Palestinian Authority collapsed in a day."

Abbas praised his "reconciliation" with Hamas terrorists in Gaza. He condemned Israeli attacks on Gaza but did not mention the thousands of rockets fired from that territory at Israeli civilians. Despite his harsh rhetoric, Abbas does not have the votes to pass his resolution. The United States, Germany, Italy and many other key nations oppose granting Palestinian statehood without negotiations with Israel - the only way to reach a final peace agreement.

"This was a counterproductive and harsh speech that offered nothing to Israelis," said former National Security Council official Richard Haas. "It was a very disappointing speech."

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is now negotiating for the Middle East Quartet, said, "You can pass whatever resolution you like at the United Nations, or at the Security Council, and it doesn't actually deliver you a state. And if you don't have a negotiation, whatever you do at the U.N. is going to be deeply confrontational."

(By The Israel Project, September 23, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray for the ongoing UN discussions regarding Palestinian statehood. Pray that the contrast between the two speeches will enlighten the international community as to Israel's true security situation and desire for a sustainable peace.

Scripture
"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds counsel is wise…There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health…Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but counselors of peace have joy" (Proverbs 12:15, 18, 20).

3.  Two Killed in Car Crash Apparently Caused by Rock AttackA father and his one-and-a-half-year-old-son were killed on Friday {September 23] in a car crash in the West Bank [Judea and Samaria] that the Israeli Police believe was caused by a Palestinian stone-throwing incident, according to police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

The ongoing police investigation so far has determined that the tragedy occurred when a sharp object, apparently a stone, struck the father in the head, causing the car to lose control. The police know no Israelis were throwing stones or "involved in any disturbances" in the area of the road at the time, leading the police to believe it was a Palestinian attack.

At the moment, the incident is considered a nationalistic attack. Rosenfeld, speaking with The Mideast Update by phone, said that at the same time other stone-throwing incidents on a lot of the roads in the West Bank occur all year. "Unfortunately this one ended tragically," he said.

Despite their presentation by some as a milder form of violence, stone-throwing still can have lethal effect, as it did here. "In the majority of cases, where our police officers arrive at the scene, stones are thrown at passing vehicles in order to attack and injure as many Israelis as possible," said Rosenfeld. "And that's exactly what happened, unfortunately, on last Friday."

Rosenfeld said there was damage to the windshield of the car and that they have examined the blood on one of the stones, DNA evidence and forensics. "Obviously we are looking into the possibility that it was carried out by suspects that were, in fact, walking around the area at the time," said Rosenfeld.

Speaking with The Mideast Update by phone, Leibovich said, "We have some information that causes us to believe either Hamas or other terror organizations are planning to execute some kind of a terror activity on the Israel-Egyptian border, and so this area is on alert right now."

Rosenfeld said that approximately 10,000-12,000 police officers are expected to be mobilized for the holiday, although that is a standard number for the festival. He expressed the hope that the festival would pass peacefully.

(Excerpts of an article by Joshua Spurlock, www.themideastupdate.com, September 26, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that the Lord will console the family of these victims of terror. Pray that He will move mightily to protect the Land and the people during this highly volatile time.

Scripture
"The LORD is righteous in all His ways, gracious in all His works. The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them. The LORD preserves all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy" (Psalm 145:17-20).

4.  Erdogan Urges UN Sanctions on IsraelTurkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is advocating imposing UN sanctions on Israel. In an interview with Time magazine, the Turkish leader said that had prospective UN sanctions been imposed on Israel "the Palestine-Israel conflict would have been resolved a long time ago."

Appearing at the UN General Assembly, Erdogan claimed that the US approach towards the Middle East peace process had failed. Asked what he would have done differently, Erdogan said: "Do we really want to resolve this issue or not? Unfortunately, I do not even see traces of this within the Quartet. Because, if the Quartet was so willing to resolve this issue, they would have imposed certain issues on Israel today.

"Until today, the UN Security Council has issued more than 89 resolutions on prospective sanctions related to Israel, but they've never been executed. And furthermore, there were about 200 resolutions issued by the General Assembly and neither have those been complied with."

He further added: "One might wonder why no sanctions have been imposed on Israel. When it's Iran in question, you impose sanctions. Similarly with Sudan. What happens with Israel then?"

Erdogan also criticized the make-up of the Security Council: "What's the deal with these permanent seat-holding members in the Security Council? They should be eliminated. The entire world is literally a slave to the decisions of these five permanent seat holders."

On the issue of the diplomatic crisis with Israel, Erdogan blamed Israel for "victimizing the positive relations of two countries with [its 2010 raid] on the Mavi Marmara." The Turkish premier also stressed relations between Ankara and Jerusalem will never become normalized until Israel apologizes for the deaths of nine Turkish citizens, pays compensation to the families of the victims and lifts the Gaza blockade.

He claimed the flotillas were carrying nothing but humanitarian aid and mentioned that one of the casualties was an American citizen of Turkish decent.

"And right now the Israeli Prime Minister still alleges that the flotillas were actually loaded with weapons. Had they possessed the weapons that were alleged, why didn't they fire back? There are reports issued by both the UN Security Council and UN agencies in Geneva about this incident and you never see the slightest trace that the flotillas were carrying guns. The Israeli government is not being honest at all."

Addressing the Palestinian bid for statehood, Erdogan said that first and foremost, the Security Council must accept the proposal. He added: "Israel first seems to have accepted going back to the borders of 1967, but somehow seemed to have got distanced from this ideal. They need to get closer back to it.

"Through Time [magazine], I'd like to make a call out to humanity: [the Palestinians] are there to exist. They are not there to be condemned to struggle in an open-air penitentiary. Israel's cruelty in that regard cannot be continued any longer."

(By Ynetnews, September 27, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that Prime Minister Erdogan will be unsuccessful in his attempts to further incite the UN and the world against Israel. Pray that no such sanctions will be imposed.

Scripture
"Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace, and do not be still, O God! For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; and those who hate You have lifted up their head. They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, and consulted together against Your sheltered ones" (Psalm 83:1-3).

5.  Palestinians Stepping Up Anti-Israel BoycottFatah official and advisor to the Palestinian president [Mahmoud Abbas] announced Monday [September 26] that the Palestinians are stepping up their non-violent campaign against Israel. Sabri Saydam said that the Palestinians will embark on a campaign via social networks, which aims to boycott all Israeli products, not just goods manufactured beyond the Green Line.

But the campaign will go even further than that, Saydam said. "We will increase pressure on Israeli academic institutions by demanding that universities worldwide, and especially in countries that support us, to sever academic ties with Israeli institutions," he said.

The Fatah official added that the Palestinians will also organize popular protests "more civilized than the ones in the Arab world," stressing that all actions will not be violent. The activity will be focused inside Palestinian towns to gain the support of foreign activists and avoid friction with Israeli forces.

"The non-violent popular struggle will manifest itself in various forms, which will illustrate the Palestinian people's suffering without giving Israel excuses to export its internal crisis," Saydam said.

The Palestinians are hoping to boost coordination between various worldwide campaigns. The campaigns may also serve to pressure the UN Security Council into endorsing the Palestinian bid for statehood, he said.

However, Saydam stressed that while the new campaign calls for the severing of commercial ties with Israel, there is no threat to the security cooperation between Jerusalem and Ramallah. The campaign is not about security or security cooperation with Israel, but about obtaining security for our people," Saydam said.

(By Elior Levy, Ynetnews, September 27, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that these attempts to further delegitimize Israel through economic boycott will be unsuccessful.

Scripture

"Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues, for I have seen violence and strife in the city. Day and night they go around it on its walls; iniquity and trouble are also in the midst of it. Destruction is in its midst; oppression and deceit do not depart from its streets...As for me, I will call upon God, and the LORD shall save me. Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, and He shall hear my voice"(Psalm 55:9-11, 16-17).

6.  IDF Delivers 5,087 Truckloads of Goods to Gaza in AugustIn August, 5,087 truckloads of goods (138,029 tons) entered the Gaza Strip via the Kerem Shalom Crossing [at the Gaza-Egypt-Israel border], marking a two percent increase from the previous month.

The goods included 81 truckloads of clothing and footwear, 149 truckloads of electric products, 1,609 truckloads of food, 1,408 truckloads of construction materials and 155 truckloads of inputs for agriculture. The transfer of goods to Gaza is coordinated by the Israeli government and IDF [Israel Defense Forces] as well as Palestinian and international organizations.

During August, 2,705 Palestinians exited the Gaza Strip through Erez Crossing. Overall, 2,853 permits were issued to Palestinians, allowing them to pass through the Erez Crossing [on the northeast border of the Gaza Strip]. These included 1,201 permits for medical purposes, enabling Palestinians to receive medical treatment in Israel, the West Bank [Judea and Samaria] and abroad. 1,130 businessmen exited Gaza via the Erez Crossing in August.

Coordination with representatives of the Palestinian Authority continued in August, with 44 meetings taking place. 701 truckloads of goods were delivered to Gaza for international organizations.

Until now, 163 projects created by the international community have been approved, of which 35 have been completed and 62 are under implementation. These projects include infrastructure, housing, education, agriculture, health, and transportation projects. Israel continues to supply electricity and water to the Gaza Strip and transferred 3,351 tons of cooking gas during the month of August.

(By the Israel Defense Forces, September 26, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Praise the Lord that Israel continues to be the venue for supplying the needs of the people of Gaza. Pray that these statistics will become known worldwide and counter the effects of Palestinian anti-Israel propaganda.

Scripture
"I will mention the loving kindnesses of the LORD and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD has bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which He has bestowed on them according to His mercies, according to the multitude of His loving kindnesses" (Isaiah 63:7).

7.  1,100 Housing Units to Be Built in GiloA plan to build 1,100 housing units in Jerusalem's Gilo neighborhood was approved Tuesday by the regional planning and construction committee. The plan includes construction of small housing units, a boardwalk, public buildings, a school and an industrial zone. Soon different bodies would be permitted to object to parts of the plan, after which the project will receive validation and a green light to begin constructions.

"It's a nice gift for Rosh Hashanah [the Jewish New Year]," said Yair Gabay, a member of the Jerusalem committee. "Jerusalem in expanding to the south, is creating affordable housing. We must clarify to the world that Jerusalem is not up for sale."

About a year and a half ago, the planning and construction committee approved a motion to expand Gilo and south Jerusalem and build new housing units in the neighborhood.

The construction project has drawn heavy criticism from Washington and left-wing organizations. Gilo was built on land that was seized during the Six Day War and later annexed to Jerusalem. The neighborhood was a frequent target of Palestinians during the second intifada [2000-2006].

(By Ronen Medzini, Ynetnews, September 27, 2011)

Prayer Focus

Pray that the Lord will shield this southern border of Jerusalem from any violence that might result from these building projects.

Scripture
"So the angel who spoke with me said to me, 'Proclaim, saying, "Thus says the LORD of hosts: 'I am zealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with great zeal'"'…It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem" (Zechariah 1:14; 12:9).

8.  Kotel Notes Cleared Ahead of HolidaysPreparations are being made at the Western Wall these days for the arrival of hundreds of thousands of worshippers during the High Holidays. Engineers arrived at the Wall last week to examine the safety of the stones and remove parts which have crumbled.

A source in the Western Wall Heritage Foundation described the preparations as "strenuous work, which includes a thorough examination of each and every stone," adding that a fraction of a stone falling on the worshippers during the holiday prayers could lead to injuries or even death.

In addition, the notes placed between the Wall's stones will be removed and transferred to a special archive. Before clearing the notes, the workers must bathe in a mikveh (ritual bath). Moreover, they must use special wooden sticks to reach the higher notes. Metal is forbidden as it is considered impure.

The note removal works will be supervised by Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, who will ensure that no one opens the notes and reads the wishes written in them. At the end of the clearance operation, the rabbi will conduct a prayer for the fulfillment of the workers' wishes.

(By Ari Galahar, Ynetnews, September 25, 2011)

Prayer Focus

Pray that the preparations for worshippers will proceed peacefully. Pray that the Lord will protect His people as they come to the Wall to pray.

Scripture

"And the LORD said to him [Solomon]: 'I have heard your prayer and your supplication that you have made before Me; I have consecrated this house [the Temple] which you have built to put My name there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually'" (1 Kings 9:3).

9.  Palestinian Patients Treated in Israel Go on a Field DayA group of Palestinian children treated for cancer in Israeli hospitals went on a field day in central Israel last week. They visited the safari in Ramat Gan, the beach in Jaffa, and went bowling in Holon. The trip was made possible thanks to a coordinated effort by the Israeli Civil Administration, the Israel Cancer Association and volunteers from the 'Encouragement From Ido' charity for pediatric cancer patients in Jerusalem.

There are currently 180 pediatric cancer patients from Judea and Samaria [the West Bank] in Hadassah Hospital, of which 50 have already received bone-marrow transplants.

Dalia Bessa, the Health Coordinator of the Civil Administration, said that trips like these are important for the emotional well-being of patients with serious illnesses. She works hard to ensure that these patients receive comprehensive treatment and care.

Lagine Abu El Hayad from Bethlehem is currently recovering from a successful bone marrow transplant, a complex operation entirely funded by the Israeli Civil Administration, an IDF [Israel Defense Forces] unit. The unit contributed 450,000 NIS [US $121.199] towards finding a bone marrow donor, the surgery and the post-operation treatment and medication.

(By Israel Defense Forces, September 22, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that these patients, once treated, will go back to their homes as advocates for the nation of Israel. Praise God for such programs through which Israel works to fulfill its mandate to be a light to the nations.

Scripture

"But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust" (Matthew 5:44-45).
