SPECIAL REPORT:
STATUS OF SEPHARDIC ANUSIM IN ISRAEL

For the last decade or two, thousands and perhaps millions of Hispanic Latinos across this Western Hemisphere have been awakening to their Jewish roots. These roots are connected to the descendants of secret Jews that were expelled from Spain and later Portugal in the late 15th Century.
Formerly, they were known as Marranos (swine, pigs), but in this last decade, they have chosen to be known as ANUSIM or Sephardic Anusim.
While the Anusim were awakening and wanting answers, those in positions of power and authority in Israel didn't know who they were-and in many cases rejected the prospect of their authenticity as Anusim Jews.
Around five to seven years ago, a handful of Israelis in positions of leadership within the Israeli government, in higher education and the private sector, began to introduce their peers to the few Anusim Hispanics that they personally knew-particularly those of America's Southwest. In fact, a few of them made trips to America in order to visit with some of us that are among the Anusim of the Southwestern states of the United States.
Now about a decade later, finally, the voices of top echelon leaders at every level of Israeli society have awakened to the absolute fact of an enormous ground swell among Anusim not only in the U.S., Mexico and Latin America but around the globe.
The voices of Anusim ascended as in a perpetual echo into the ears of serious minded Israeli leaders to the point of holding the first conference on Anusim, ever, in Israel.
Helen and I were smack in the middle of this historic event which finally legitimized our existence and is now "forcing" a new door to open up in the halls and courts of Israel. I have therefore developed a bird's eye view of the proceedings of this amazing conference titled, The Worldwide Awakening of the Secret Jews (Anusim).
This Special Report will also serve to introduce a brand new chapter to my newsletter series. From here on out, each and every newsletter will be in English as well as Spanish. My petition is that you forward these newsletters to as many Anusim as you know-those that you suspect may have Anusim roots of Spanish Jewry. One indicator is their Hispanic/Latino surname. Another indicator is their use of the Spanish language. Some may have hinted of their suspicions of having Spanish Jewish roots.
When the time is right, we aspire to create a coalition of International Anusim so that we may inform one another of important issues related to our people and to present a united voice before the proper agencies within the government of Israel.

International Conference on Anusim

The Worldwide Awakening of the Descendants of Secret Jews (Anusim
On June 22, 2011 in the City of Netanya, Israel, the Netanya Academic College together with its International Institute of Secret Jews (Anusim) held the first historic conference on the descendants of the Secret Jews (Anusim) from around the world. This conference was the first event which Israel has had in relation to Anusim. A former president of Israel, diplomats, experts and other luminaries in the field gathered to declare the phenomenal awakening of Anusim at a worldwide scale, including our Western Hemisphere of the Americas.
In one sentence I can say it was a day that set forth precedence for the Israeli government and for every country where the descendants of secret Jews may dwell. It was a day that shook the nation of Israel and the heavens in terms of a landmark discovery of Anusim with respect to the people who have lived consciously or unconsciously in virtual hiding. It was a day that marked the beginning of a long series of events that shall now occur throughout the institutions and government of Israel and in the hearts and communities of Anusim wherever they might be. I can freely say that this event has embraced a brand new day with great hope, future and destiny for the people of Latino-Hispanic Anusim.
Therefore, this report will document the points of maximum illumination and focus for the present situation as well as the future purpose of our people, the Anusim. This report shall also provide a brief paragraph about what many of the speakers said and end with a synthesis and commentary which is so significant for all Anusim.
The moderator of this event was Professor Michael Corinaldi, the head of the International Institute of the descendants of Secret Jews (Anusim) in the Netanya Academic College in Israel. Besides being the head of this Institute, he is also a famous lawyer specializing on the process of petitions and appeals for peculiar cases such as those of the Black Ethiopian Jews, Russian Jews, including Jews of India known as B'nei Manashe, or the people of Manasseh. In the afternoon session, Professor Corinaldi also presented his paper which I will later refer to.
The President of the Netanya Academic College, Professor Zvi Arad opened wide the door of this conference when he mentioned that the history of Anusim has been a very long and bloody one, with much pain and sorrow. He declared that the nation of Israel needs the Anusim in order to strengthen and support Israel. More than once he mentioned the City of San Antonio, but I'm not sure if he was referring to a city of the same name in another country or to my native city of San Antonio, Texas. He said that there have been talks and significant discussions in San Antonio with respect to the Anusim. (In parentheses I would like to say that it is very possible he was referring to my native city of San Antonio for the work we have done for more than 15 years among the Anusim and because recently a conference with respect to Jewish and Latino relations was held at the Rodfei Sholom Synagogue here in San Antonio, Texas of these United States of America.)

 The Chief Rabbi of the City of Tel Avi, Rabbi Meir Lau also spoke with passion in favor of the Anusim. He urged that the Anusim has a special destiny that all Israel should help it carry out. He stated the Anusim should devote one day of the year to pray for each other, in particular each individual Anusim should pray for his fellow Anusim. He insisted that he will do everything possible to cooperate with any effort to help the Anusim so that one day they, too, may make Aliyah.
The former President of the Supreme Court of Israel, Mr. Meir Shamgar said that we need to stress the existence and reality of the Anusim. He said that this topic is not only a Jewish topic but a universal one as well. He stated that we need to see all Anusim as individual persons (not merely as a large people-group). He said that it is time for them to start coming out of their hiding places but we (the Jewish people) need to give them a hand in this process. As an elder in age and a high ranking leader, he said, "We have never forgotten the Anusim." He also said that the heart of the Anusim has never forgotten Israel.
At the point that the Ambassador of Spain to Israel, H. E. Don Alvaro Iranzo begin to speak, sirens began blaring all across the country. This was merely one of their modern drills against the times in which there might be a nuclear, chemical or similar attack. The moderator indicated that it was only an exercise and not an actual threat. The ambassador said that the B'nei or people of Anusim have suffered from very negative labels and stereotypes such as being called Marranos, (meaning swine, pigs.) He mentioned that during his school education, he was never taught regarding the Anusim in Spain. Sincerely, he stated that the people of Anusim are a heroic people even in the midst of grave dangers. He stated that one of his paternal ancestors was killed because he helped the Anusim in Spain. With conviction he stated that the Spanish Embassy will do everything possible to assist the Anusim Institute at this college.

Leon Edri mentioned that in addition to being Israeli, he is a member of the Anusim. He is the owner of the Cinema City. In his documentary film, an expert in the history of Anusim in Portugal said the number of Anusim around the world is much larger than we think. He affirmed that almost all members of the Anusim in Portugal were elite and of a very high caliber, owners of large companies, bankers, scientists, educators, doctors and business owners. He declared that they were also the popular tailors, shoemakers, bakers and so forth. With deep conviction, he said that the history of Anusim is much more severe and difficult than we can ever imagine; and that their population numbers including those that fled Spain are much greater than expected.
Mordechai Arbel, former Ambassador to the Caribbean and author of various books on Jews of that region spoke eloquently about his discoveries while in Central America. (Mr. Arbel has graced us as a guest speaker at some of the Anusim conferences we've held in Sde Boker, the headquarters of the Ben Gurion Heritage Institute in the Negev.) Mr. Arbel stated that the Anusim changed many of the Sephardic songs and practices before they even knew they were Anusim. He declared that they (the Jewish community) didn't know how to help them. He declared, "We lost them" in the process. He stated that his experience has been that many Anusim desire to embrace Judaism but need help in so doing.
Ms Renee Levine Melammed of Brandeis University and the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, Jerusalem spoke about the lives of female Judeo-Conversas. She stated that they, too, suffered the penalties and sufferings of the Spanish Inquisition. In fact, she declared that the label that was often placed on these women was that of being "subversive" possibly because they were the ones that made the essential preparations for Shabbat, the Feasts and other special occasions. (This reminded me of my father's sisters who could have easily been also labeled as "subversive" because of the way in which they defied the Catholic clergy and their idolatrous demands.)

Professor Corinaldi emphatically stated we should stop referring to the Anusim as Marranos, a term by which they have been known since the days of the Spanish Inquisition. This is negative said the professor. The professor is presently doing an investigation on positive terms that sound like the term Marrano but do not mean swine or pig. Among the terms he referred to one which phonetically sounded something like marranah'tah, which means one who waits in anticipation. (As I review these notes I am suddenly aware that I heard this word spoken by my father and his family in light of our longing to someday see G-d's messiah.) Passionately he declared that we should not accuse the Anusim for the sins their parents committed during the Spanish and later the Portuguese Inquisitions. He appealed to the Orthodox rabbis to be more flexible and less demanding of Anusim Jews. (Parenthetically, I'd like to add that my wife and I had the privilege of visiting with this gentleman in his Jerusalem office; and our discussion was very fruitful and promising.) At one point and with utter gentleness and respect, he stood up and as he shook our hands as he said to us, "You are my brother and my sister, and I am your brother." He also stated that he would be very interested in fighting the cause for Anusim before the Israeli authorities. He stated this would be his "mitzvoth," (his duty and good work).
Before concluding this section of my report, I would like to give credit to the other leaders who presented a paper. I shall merely mention their names and their position or title.

Personal Comments and Observations
Three points gave me hope with respect to the outcome of this Conference.
First, I felt confident that this conference was not only one prone to more socio-cultural research of the Anusim but also a means that leads towards action in reaching out to Anusim in practical ways.
Second, I felt that the echoes of these presentations and dialogues have already reached the ears of the Jewish Agency and particularly the Ministry of the Interior of Israel. I am pleased to say that, both, the scholastic as well as the rabbinic community will begin to put pressure on Israeli authorities in order to initiate a new design on how to help the Anusim make Aliyah.
Thirdly, I believe that new doors will soon open up to members of the Anusim, both to youth and adults, so that they may enjoy the opportunity of studying in the International Institute of Anusim in the Netanya Academic College. In addition, I think that they will open doors for Spanish and English courses including sessions via the internet as well as brief institutes and seminars where one can invest a brief period of time in the Institute while at the same time travel through Israel to see sites of significance including the Negev which so many Anusim feel a profound connection to.
In conclusion, I am persuaded that everything that was presented was not mere rhetoric or show. The speakers were serious-minded and very enlightened Israeli leaders with what appeared to be very sincere hearts. It is my strong opinion, based on what one or more top Israeli leaders have shared with me that there is a strong possibility that unless the Anusim begin to make Aliyah, the non-Jewish population will begin to overshadow the socio-political system in Israel. In fact, if my memory serves me correctly, it was the head of the Jewish National Fund, Abraham Duvdevani who stated to me that if there isn't a significant influx of Jews, such as the Anusim, by the year 2020, the Palestinians and Bedouin population will be larger than that of the Jewish population in Israel. Similarly, Shmuel Riffman, mayor of the Ramat Negev Regional Council and mayor of mayors over fifty-five regional councils stated that his plan is to help usher in one million Jews into the Negev. Hence, he was encouraging my wife and me to continue to pursue our efforts in helping to prepare Anusim for their eventual Aliyah, particularly to the Negev.
We have a long way to go but at last we now have Israeli leaders in high places to advocate on our behalf within the social system and courts of Israel.

REPORTE ESPECIAL:
ESTADO DEL SEFARDIM ANUSIM EN ISRAEL
Por la ultima década o dos, miles y quizá millones de Hispanos Latinos al cruzar este Hemisferio Occidental han estado despertando a sus raíces Judíos. Estas raíces están conectadas a los descendientes de los Judios secretos que fueron expulsados de España y después de Portugal al fin del Siglo 15.
Previamente, fueron llamados Marranos (cerdos), pero en esta última década han preferido ser conocidos como ANUSIM o Sefardim Anusim.
Mientras el Anusim estaban despertando y demandando respuestas, Judios en posiciones de poder y autoridad en Israel no tenían idea de quien eran-y en muchos de los casos rechazaron la idea de la autenticidad de que fueran Judios Anusim.
Como cinco a siete años pasados, unos cuantos Israelíes en posiciones de liderazgo dentro del gobierno Israelí, como también en educación universitaria y el sector privado empezaron a introducir a sus consiervos tocante a los pocos Anusim Hispanos que ellos personalmente conocieron-particularmente a los de los Estados del Suroeste de los Estados Unidos de América.
Ahora, una década más tarde, finalmente, las voces de líderes muy elevados a todo nivel de la sociedad Israelí están despertando a la verdad absoluta de un enorme crecimiento del Anusim no solo en los Estados Unidos pero también en México, a través de América Latina y alrededor del globo terrestre.
Las voces del Anusim ascendieron en un eco perpetuo hasta el llegar a los oídos de líderes Israelís de seriedad hasta el llegar a la primera conferencia sobre el Anusim en Israel.
Helen y yo estuvimos en el medio de este evento histórico que, al fin, confirmo la verdad de nuestra existencia y ahora está forzando el abrir de una nueva puerta en los salones y cortes de Israel. Por lo tanto, he documentado una síntesis de los procedimientos de esta conferencia intitulada El Despertamiento Mundial de los Descendientes de los Judios Secreto (Anusim).
Este Reporte Especial también servirá para introducir un nuevo capítulo en la serie de mis boletines. De aquí en adelante, cada boletín será en español e inglés. Conferencia sobre el Anusim Internacional en Netanya, Israel

Título de la conferencia El Despertamiento Mundial de los Descendientes de los Judios Secretos (Anusim)
El día 22 de junio del 2011 en la ciudad de Netanya, Israel, el Colegio Académico Netanya con su Instituto Internacional de Judios Secretos (Anusim) celebro la primera conferencia histórica sobre los descendientes de los Judios secretos (Anusim) de alrededor del mundo. Esta conferencia fue el primer evento que Israel ha tenido con relación al Anusim donde un ex presidente de Israel, diplomáticos y luminarios expertos sobre este tema se congregaron para declarar el despertamiento fenomenal del Anusim mundialmente, incluyendo, y particularmente en nuestro hemisferio occidental.
En una frase diré que fue un día que estableció una precedencia perpetua primero para el gobierno de Israel y para todo país donde se encuentran los descendientes de Judios secretos que fueron expulsados de España y de Portugal a fines del siglo quince. Fue un día que estrujo la nación de Israel como también los cielos en términos de un descubrimiento histórico tocante al pueblo Anusim que ha vivido a las escondidas consciente o inconscientemente. Fue un día que marco el principio de una larga serie de eventos que ahora ocurrirán a través de las instituciones y gobierno de Israel como también en los corazones y comunidades de Anusim donde quiere que se encuentren. Con libertad diré que este evento será el abarcamiento de una nueva jornada con mucha esperanza, futuro y destino para el pueblo de Anusim Latino-Hispano.
Por lo tanto, documentare en este reporte los puntos de máxima iluminación y énfasis para la situación presente del Anusim como también el propósito futuro de nuestro pueblo. Proveeré un párrafo breve sobre lo que dijeron algunos de los oradores y terminare con una síntesis y comentario de lo que todos declararon sobre este tema tan significante para todo Anusim.
El moderador mayor de este evento fue el Profesor Michael Corinaldi, el encabezado del Instituto Internacional de los Descendientes de los Judios Secreto (Anusim) dentro del Colegio Académico Netanya en Israel. A parte de ser el encabezado de este instituto, también es un abogado famoso en el proceso de petición y apelación sobre casos peculiares y dificultosos tal como los de los Judios Negros de Etiopia, Judios Rusos incluyendo Judios de la India conocidos como B'nei Manashe, es decir, el Pueblo de Manases. En las sesiones de la tarde, el también presento su papel que más tarde representare.
El presidente del Colegio Académico Netanya, el Profesor Zvi Arad abrió la puerta de esta conferencia de par en par cuando menciono que la historia de Pueblo Anusim ha sido muy sangrienta contra ellos, con mucha pena y dolor. Declaro que la Nación de Israel necesita al Anusim para reforzar y soportar a Israel. Más de una vez menciono la ciudad de San Antonio pero todavía no estoy seguro si se refería a mi ciudad nativa de San Antonio o una ciudad de igual nombre en alguno otro país. Dijo que ha habido pláticas y discusiones significativas en San Antonio tocante al Anusim. (Entre paréntesis diré que es muy posible que se refería a mi ciudad San Antonio, Texas por el trabajo que hemos hecho por más de 15 años en pro del Anusim y porque recientemente tuvimos una conferencia tocante a las relaciones Judías y Latinas aquí en los Estados Unidos de América.)

El ex Presidente de la Corte Suprema de Israel, el Señor Meir Shamgar dijo que necesitamos que enfatizar la existencia y la realidad del Anusim. Dijo que este tema no tan solo es un tema Judío sino también universal. Declaro que necesitamos que ver a todo el pueblo Anusim como una persona humano. Dijo que ya es tiempo de que salgan de sus lugares escondidos pero tenemos que darles la mano en este proceso. Como un anciano de edad y de estatura socio-político, dijo, ¨Nunca nos hemos olvidado del Anusim.¨ También dijo que el corazón del Anusim nunca se ha olvidado de Israel.
Al punto que comenzó a hablar el Embajador de España a Israel, el Señor H.E. Don Álvaro Iranzo, las sirenas empezaron a sonar a través de toda el país. Este fue meramente una los ejercicios modernos contra los tiempos en las cuales habrá peligro nuclear, química y eventos semejantes. El anfitrión y moderador indico que era solamente un ejercicio y no la real cosa para que la audiencia no se alarmara. El embajador dijo que el B'nei o Pueblo Anusim ha sufrido de rótulos y estereotipos muy negativos como el ser llamados Marranos. Menciono que durante su educación escolar, nunca fueron educados tocante al Anusim en España. Sinceramente declaro que el Pueblo Anusim es un pueblo heroico aun en medio de grandes peligros. Declaro que uno de sus ancestros paternos fue matado por ayudarle al Anusim en España. Con convicción declaro que la Embajada Española hará todo lo posible para asistir al Instituto Anusim del Colegio Académico de Netanya, Israel.

León Edri menciono que además de ser Israelí, él es miembro del Pueblo Anusim. Él es el dueño de la Ciudad Cinema. En su película documental, un experto en la historia del Anusim en Portugal afirmo que la cantidad de Anusim alrededor del mundo es mucho más grande que lo que uno piensa. También afirmo que casi todos los miembros del Anusim en Portugal eran de alto calibre, dueños de grandes empresas, científicos, educadores, médicos, dueños de negocios grandes y pequeños, etc. Este experto declaro que la verdad es que la historia del Anusim es mucho más severo y penoso que lo que nos imaginamos.
Aproximadamente quince ilustres dieron una presentación afirmando y confirmando lo que sus colegas habían o habrían de decir. Entre todos estos quiero terminar con unos puntos que presento el Profesor Corinaldi, Jefe del Instituto Anusim en este colegio de Netanya. Enfáticamente dijo que ya no deberíamos referirnos al Anusim como Marranos, un término por la cual hemos sido conocidos desde los días de la Inquisición Española. Esto es negativo dijo el profesor. Afirmo que él está haciendo una investigación de términos positivos que suenan como el término Marrano. Un término al cual se refirió que suena algo como Marrana'tah significa uno que espera en anticipación. Apasionadamente declaro que no debemos acusar al Anusim por los pecados de sus padres por haberse convertido al Catolicismo. Apelo a los rabinos ortodoxos a que sean más flexibles y menos demandantes del Pueblo de Judios Anusim. (Entre paréntesis también diré que mi esposa y yo tuvimos el privilegio de visitar con este profesor en su oficina en Jerusalén y nos trató de lo mejor. Antes de terminar nuestra junta con él y después de discusiones muy significantes tocante a nuestro trabajo con el Anusim del Hemisferio Occidental, se levantó y nos dio la mano y nos dijo lo siguiente: Ustedes son mi hermano y mi hermana y yo soy vuestro hermano. También nos declaró que estaría muy interesado en pelear la causa del Anusim delante de las autoridades Israelíes.

(El Señor Arbel nos ha bendecido con su presencia y sus presentaciones en varios de las conferencias sobre el Anusim que yo he administrado en Sde Boker, Neguev-el plantel del Instituto de la Heredad de Ben Gurion.) El Señor Arbel nos dijo que el Anusim había cambiado muchos de los cantos y practicas antes de saber que era Anusim. Nos declaró que la comunidad Judía los perdió por no saber cómo tratar con ellos. También nos dijo que en su experiencia muchos Anusim desean abrazar el Judaísmo pero necesitan la ayuda de la comunidad Judía

Comentarios y Observaciones Personales
No oí ni una queja o comentario negativo de parte de la audiencia que contaba con la mayoría de Israelís y algunos de otros países. La mayoría de la audiencia eran adultos de edad madura. Opino que muchos de ellos son profesores, líderes de comunidades y organizaciones en Israel.
Tres observaciones me dieron buena esperanza tocante al resultado de esta conferencia.
Primero, observe y me sentí confiado que esta conferencia resultara no solo en mas investigaciones socio-culturales del Anusim pero también como un medio para la acción en ayudar al Pueblo Anusim.
Segundo, sentí que los ecos de estas presentaciones y los diálogos que procederán ya han llegado a los oídos de la Agencia Judía y sobre todo el Ministerio del Interior de Israel que se ocupa en aceptar o negar el privilegio de alía para todo Judío. Y me siento satisfecho con decir que el pueblo escolástico como también rabínico le pondrá presión a las autoridades a que empiecen un nuevo diseño en cómo ayudar para que el Anusim haga alía.
Tercero, creo que se abrirán, en el futuro cercano, nuevas puertas para que miembros del Anusim, ambos jóvenes y adultos logren educarse en este Instituto Internacional de Anusim en este Colegio Académico de Netanya. A demás, creo que se abrirán puertas para sesiones especiales en español e inglés como también cursos a través del internet, y también institutos y seminarios breves donde uno pueda invertir un plazo breve de tiempo en este instituto y a la vez viajar a través de Israel para conocerlo, incluyendo el Neguev.
En conclusión, siento en mi alma que todo lo que se dijo y se presentó no es meramente retorica o palabrerías. Siento que el pueblo iluminado de Israelíes sabe muy bien que si no ayudan a nuestro pueblo mientras que tienen la oportunidad, una de dos va a acontecer. Uno, se cansaran de esperar y se desanimaran o dos, algunos serán reclutados a círculos no amistosos a Israel como Islam. Saben muy bien que si no comienzan desde hoy a colaborar con nuestros deseos de hacer alía, el pueblo Palestino Musulmán y los Beduinos también Musulmanes se multiplicaran y, a su debido tiempo, serán la mayoría en Israel aun sobre el Pueblo Escogido de Judios. Por lo tanto, mi convicción es que hagamos todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance para prepáranos en toda esfera de nuestras vidas para cuando el día venga en la cual nos quieren dar la mano para hacer alía, estemos listos para cruzar el Jordán de nuestras vidas hacia nuestra Tierra Prometida.
