For the last decade or two, thousands and perhaps millions of Hispanic Latinos across this Western Hemisphere have been awakening to their Jewish roots. These roots are connected to the descendants of secret Jews that were expelled from Spain and later Portugal in the late 15th Century. Formerly, they were known as Marranos (swine, pigs), but in this last decade, they have chosen to be known as ANUSIM or Sephardic Anusim. While the Anusim were awakening and wanting answers, those in positions of power and authority in Israel didn't know who they were-and in many cases rejected the prospect of their authenticity as Anusim Jews. Around five to seven years ago, a handful of Israelis in positions of leadership within the Israeli government, in higher education and the private sector, began to introduce their peers to the few Anusim Hispanics that they personally knew-particularly those of America's Southwest. In fact, a few of them made trips to America in order to visit with some of us that are among the Anusim of the Southwestern states of the United States. Now about a decade later, finally, the voices of top echelon leaders at every level of Israeli society have awakened to the absolute fact of an enormous ground swell among Anusim not only in the U.S., Mexico and Latin America but around the globe. The voices of Anusim ascended as in a perpetual echo into the ears of serious minded Israeli leaders to the point of holding the first conference on Anusim, ever, in Israel. Helen and I were smack in the middle of this historic event which finally legitimized our existence and is now "forcing" a new door to open up in the halls and courts of Israel. I have therefore developed a bird's eye view of the proceedings of this amazing conference titled, The Worldwide Awakening of the Secret Jews (Anusim).  This Special Report will also serve to introduce a brand new chapter to my newsletter series. From here on out, each and every newsletter will be in English as well as Spanish. My petition is that you forward these newsletters to as many Anusim as you know-those that you suspect may have Anusim roots of Spanish Jewry. One indicator is their Hispanic/Latino surname. Another indicator is their use of the Spanish language. Some may have hinted of their suspicions of having Spanish Jewish roots. When the time is right, we aspire to create a coalition of International Anusim so that we may inform one another of important issues related to our people and to present a united voice before the proper agencies within the government of Israel.
