Carmel Fires Appeal
The Carmel forest fires which erupted near Haifa on Thursday are already being called the worst natural disaster in Israel’s modern history and the toll in terms of lost lives, resources and habitat is still mounting.
Israeli firefighters, security forces and emergency teams struggled yesterday to contain the blazes which broke out in the nation’s largest forested area on the south slopes of the Carmel range. The flaming inferno created from four separate fires – now believed to have been deliberately set – were fed by the drought conditions and strong easterly desert winds. By nightfall, several square kilometers of beautiful forests were destroyed and 40 security personnel sent to evacuate an endangered prison died when rapidly spreading flames engulfed their bus. By nightfall, Israeli officials admitted they were unable to contain the wildfire and appealed for international assistance.
The International Christian Embassy Jerusalem is joining in this appeal by asking our friends and supporters worldwide to donate towards the rescue and recovery efforts now underway here in Israel. We have been in contact with some of our traditional Israeli charitable partners in this regard and already know of several immediate needs that could use our help.
For instance, the Zaka emergency volunteer network has committed all its manpower and equipment to this catastrophe and approached us this morning about helping to fund their efforts, as we did with their participation in the Haiti earthquake disaster at the start of this year.
In addition, the Yad Ezer L’Haver organization, our partner this year in establishing the new Haifa Home for Holocaust Survivors, informed us overnight that the facility has also been opened up as an emergency shelter for hundreds of area residents forced to evacuate their homes.
The ICEJ will also be activating our longstanding partnership with the Jewish National Fund to be ready when the time comes to replant the Carmel forest, which is considered a national treasure.
So please give today to help with the Carmel fire disaster by making an on-line donation at https://www.icej.org/donate.php
Make sure to mark the box for “Israel Crisis Fund”.
[Please note that American donors will be redirected to our ICEJ-USA website for tax receipting purposes.]
