האם אפשר היה למנוע את התפשטות השריפה בכרמל? מדריך טיסה טוען כי זיהה את השריפה בתחילתה והתריע בפני שירותי הכבאות, אך לדבריו רק כעבור יותר משעתיים עלה לאוויר מטוס כיבוי ראשון.
המדריך, אלון חיים, הבחין בשריפה באזור סלעי בפאתי עוספייה במהלך שיעור טיסה באזור חיפה. מדריך הטיסה דיווח על השריפה בשעה 11:14 בבוקר למגדל הפיקוח והמגדל דיווח לשירותי הכבאות. חיים תיעד את השריפה במצלמתו והמשיך בשיעור הטיסה.

"ב-11:14 ראיתי עשן קטן בפאתי הישוב עוספייה, בקצה של מקום בו שופכים זבל", סיפר אלון חיים, "זה היה בקצה הדרומי. דיווחתי בקשר למגדל חיפה על השריפה, וקיבלתי בקשר הודעה שהם מעבירים את המידע לשירותי כיבוי אש".
לאחר מכן, המשיך חיים לטוס באזור עוד עשרים דקות. "ראיתי שהשריפה ממש קטנה, אבל לא ראיתי

בשלב זה עזב חיים את המקום, וכשחזר ראה ש"השריפה הספיקה להתפשט בעוצמות גדולות הרבה יותר. גם אז לא ראיתי שום מטוס באזור. אחר כך ביררתי עם המגדל בחיפה והבנתי שמטוס הכיבוי הראשון הגיע רק בסביבות 13:45. השאלה הגדולה היא למה".
