As religious clashes break out across Cairo, we offer two reports that get inside the New Year bombing and the protracted history of persecution and violence between Muslims and Copts in Egypt.
In Egypt both the Church and the former Egyptian government had for many years created a wall of silence to conceal the ugly persecution of the Christian minority by Islamic extremists. New Year's Eve brought the conflict out in the open with a horrific attack on a Coptic Church: "the whole floor was covered in blood". Yet as the tensions between Islam and the West worsen, the Copts tell us it wasn't always like this: "there was once no hatred between us".
