1.  Hamas Condemns US Assassination of Osama Bin LadenWhile voices around the world congratulated the US for killing arch-terrorist and Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas condemned the assassination. According to a news report posted on the Hamas military wing's Web site, Ismail Haniyeh, the prime minister for the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip, on Monday [May 2], referred to bin Laden as an Arab "holy warrior," mourned his death, and condemned the assassination of any Muslim holy warrior: "If these news [reports] are true, then this means that its part of the American policy based on the oppression and bloodshed in the Muslim and Arab world."

The statements came against the backdrop of an expected interim government deal between Hamas and Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party set to take place later this week.

In their coverage of the Palestinian response to bin Laden's death, The New York Times quoted a Hamas lawmaker as calling the US assassination of bin Laden "state terrorism," saying the US could have arrested and tried the Al-Qaeda leader. The Hamas lawmaker also highlighted differences between Hamas and Al-Qaeda, noting that Al-Qaeda targets the US as the enemy, but Hamas only fights against Israel.

Meanwhile, Israeli leader Benjamin Netanayhu congratulated the Americans on the successful removal of bin Laden. In a statement posted on the Prime Minister's Office Web site and on Youtube, Netanayhu said, "This is an historic day for the United States of America and for all the countries engaged in the battle against terrorism. I want to congratulate President Obama and the American people. I want to congratulate America's soldiers and its intelligence personnel for a truly outstanding achievement.

"It took ten years to track Osama bin Laden down. It took ten years to bring a measure of justice to his victims. But the battle against terrorism is long and relentless and resolute. This is a day of victory-a victory for justice, for freedom and for our common civilization."

In a statement published on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Web site, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Danny Ayalon linked bringing bin Laden to justice to the justice finally brought upon the Nazis, as remembered in Israel's Holocaust Memorial Day, which began Sunday evening [May 1].

Said Ayalon, "This successful operation sends the important message that terror and evil will find no permanent shelter and will eventually be destroyed, just as the Nazis decades before. The rejoinder to remember and never forget is not about revenge, but about seeking justice. Regardless of time murderers and terrorists will receive the justice they deserve."

(By Joshua Spurlock, BFP Israel Mosaic Radio, May 2, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that the Lord will protect Israel and the West against any backlash from terrorist groups precipitated by this military action.

Scripture
"Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name. Let Your mercy, O LORD, be upon us, just as we hope in You" (Psalm 33:20-22).

2.  Ben Gurion Airport Reeling from Fuel HitchAir traffic at  Ben Gurion International Airport partially resumed Thursday night, after one of the most chaotic days ever noted by the country's gateway. Earlier, a contamination detected at the airport's fuel terminal forced it to ground all planes, bringing air traffic over Israel to a virtual standstill. The reason for the contamination has yet to be determined.

Dozens of tankers were sent to the Pi Glilot Fuel Depot and then hauled jet fuel to the airport, where planes began taking off, sometimes as little as five minutes apart. The IDF sent five fuel tankers to the airport as well, granting a request to that effect by Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz. Still, some of the planes were instructed to fly to international airports in Jordan, Greece and Cyprus, so they could refuel properly. Additional tankers have been sent to Eilat's airfield, where Israeli planes have been grounded since noon.

"All the right decisions were made, starting with grounding flights and setting up the situation room, to finding alternative fueling methods," the Israel Airport Authority said. Still, the problem - which has yet to be fully identified - is not expected to be resolved before next week, causing a bottleneck in Israel's skies. A Ben Gurion Airport official said delays are expected for all flights.

The Airport Authority has decided to prioritize the refueling process, saying east-bound flights headed to destinations such as Thailand would be given priority simply because they are unable to stop and refuel in neighboring counties; while flights headed to Europe have the ability to stop in Cyprus or Greece. Due to the gridlock, the airport will allow for takeoffs all through the night.

The damage caused by the fuel contamination is estimated at millions of dollars. According to aviation experts, the airlines - which are the ones bearing the initial financial brunt - are likely to sue the State and the jet fuel providers for damages.

Despite extensive testing by the Israel Institute of Energy and Environment, the contaminating agent has yet to be identified. The institute has been able, however, to rule out the possibility of a biological agent. Samples of the contaminated fuel have been sent to a German laboratory for further analysis.

Meanwhile, Minister Katz expressed concerns that the fuel contamination may also affect public transportation fuel reserves, saying his ministry has already received complaints from both Egged and Dan.

(Excerpts of an article by Boaz Fyler, Israel News, May 5, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that the Lord will protect all air traffic in and out of Israel from any malfunctions or catastrophes as well as all forms of public transportation in the country that rely on the same fuel source. Pray that the financial repercussions of this contamination remain at a minimum.

Scripture
"The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore" (Psalm 121:7-8).

3.  Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood to Vie in September ElectionThe Muslim Brotherhood has announced it will create a political party to vie in Egypt's September parliamentary elections. The party, which will call itself the Freedom and Justice party, will officially be independent from the Brotherhood, but "will coordinate with it" according to a spokesman for the group. The distinction appears to be nothing more than a legal technicality. Since the downfall of Hosni Mubarak became inevitable, observers have wondered openly whether the new political situation in Egypt would open the door to Islamist organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was among the first to voice concern, warning that Israel's relationship with the post-Mubarak regime is unlikely to be as productive as relations were with the Mubarak government, even though that relationship became synonymous with the term "cold peace."

Last week, Egypt's army chief-of-staff warned Israel not to interfere with plans to open the Rafah crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip-a move Israel sees as undermining security. The Israelis are also concerned about multiple overtures to Hamas extended by the new Egyptian regime.

Under Mubarak, the Brotherhood was officially banned, but it was able to run candidates as individuals who were known to represent it. The official state newspaper reported on Saturday [April 30] that Hosni Mubarak will be tried for corruption and complicity to murder. The latter charge stems from accusations that he ordered troops to fire on protestors in the demonstrations that ultimate brought about his downfall. The charge carries the death penalty.

(By The Media Line, May 1, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that the Lord will intervene to protect Egypt, Israel and the world from the growing threat of this radical, anti-Israel, anti-American organization.

Scripture
"Arise, O LORD, confront him, cast him down; deliver my life from the wicked with Your sword" (Psalm 17:13).

4.  Netanyahu: I Doubt the World Has Learned Holocaust LessonPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday [May 1] compared the Holocaust with current threats on Israel from Iran, Hamas, and Hizbullah during a ceremony at the Yad Vashem [Holocaust] Museum in Jerusalem, which launched Holocaust Remembrance Day events.

"We must not bury our heads in the sand and dismiss the threat with words of mockery," he said. "Has the world learned this lesson? I doubt it. Have we? I believe we have." Addressing Israel's enemies, Netanyahu said: "The world should know that when the people of Israel and the Israel Defense Forces [IDF] say 'Never again'-we mean every word."

Netanyahu addressed the Iranian threat throughout his speech. "It seems the world finds it easier to talk of lessons of the past rather than project them on the present day and future. But we, members of the Jewish people, must not ignore the lessons of the Holocaust on days such as these. New enemies continue to emerge, and as they deny the Holocaust and call for the annihilation of our people, Iran and its cohorts Hizbullah and Hamas openly call for the destruction of the Jewish state.

"All the world's cultured people, all those who say they have learned the lessons of the Holocaust, must unequivocally condemn those who call for the annihilation of the Jewish state. Iran is arming itself to fulfill this very end, and the world has yet to stop it. The threat on our existence cannot be swept aside; it is facing us, as well as mankind, and must be stopped."

President Shimon Peres said during the ceremony that Israel is committed to being the most anti-racist country in the world. "We, members of the Jewish people, were victims of racism, persecution, and discrimination, but we never abandoned the obligation to honor every person. We were not blinded by darkness," he said.

"Even in a dark world, we have aspired and continue to aspire to be a light unto the nations. We were alone, with no state of our own. The allied forces' bomber planes that flew over Auschwitz did not drop a single bomb on the mass murder facilities," he said.

"The Holocaust determined there is no replacement for a home of our own. There is no replacement for the Israel Defense Forces. Today we have an excellent army which the world has learned to respect. We have a democratic regime which knows how to defend itself and spread peace. That is our answer to the enemy, to any enemy."

Peres added, "Even after the Holocaust, there remains a regime whose leaders are public Holocaust deniers and inciters. This should arouse horror with any person and shock any conscience. Iran's fanatic high echelon is a danger to the entire world, not just a threat on Israel. It poses a real danger to the fate of mankind. The world's nations have declared they will not tolerate a nuclear Iran. They are now being tested."

Six Holocaust survivors lighted torches at Yad Vashem as part of a ceremony under the banner "The faces behind the documents, artifacts and photographs."

(Excerpts of an article by Yair Altman, Ynetnews, May 1, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that the international community will take a strong stand against Holocaust denial and insure that coming generations are taught the truth of that horrific event. Pray that the Lord will intervene in the lives of the remaining Holocaust survivors, protecting and comforting them as they age.

Scripture
"LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear, to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may oppress no more" (Psalm 10:17-18).

5.  A Libel: Israel Imitates NazisHolocaust desecration, denial, and abuse are all components of Palestinian Authority [PA] ideology and discourse. Palestinian Media Watch [PMW] has reported on the ongoing PA libel that Israel imitates the Nazis by intentionally causing prisoners' "slow death."

The latest of these libels is that Israel attempts to "imitate the German Nazis... use prisoners as guinea pigs for testing the weapons and the deadly drugs... The Nazi German doctor, Josef Mengele, was the most famous among them." [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, April 17, 2011]

Last month the PA repeated this same libel, that "Israeli doctors also carry out medical experiments on prisoners," adding that "there are [Israeli] prisons which fall under the military administration... They resemble the detention camps during the Nazi period." [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, April 15, 2011]

PMW has recently reported on Palestinian opposition to Holocaust education in PA schools because, according to the PA daily, "for more than 60 years [the Holocaust] has aroused a great amount of controversy and fabrication." PMW also recently reported that UNRWA workers are "adamantly opposed" to teaching about the Holocaust because it will "confuse the thinking" of children" [although UNRWA itself has expressed support for teaching about the subject].

The PA has a long history of Holocaust abuse. In the past, a PA TV children's broadcast taught that Israel burned Palestinians in ovens, and PA schoolbooks erase the history of the Holocaust. Children are taught about Nazi racism and the Nuremberg Trials but are not taught that Jews were the object of the racism or what the Nazi crimes were.

The following are the latest Holocaust-related libels from the official PA daily:

"'Slow death' [is] the Israeli system for exterminating prisoners... [There is] an entire system called 'slow death,' which the Israeli establishment uses against Palestinian prisoners, from the moment of their arrest until they are released... The 'experiments' station is perhaps one of the most dangerous stations in the slow death of released prisoners, who suffer from diseases which they contracted in prison. Since the Israeli jailers attempt to imitate the German Nazis, who were the first to use prisoners as guinea pigs, for testing the weapons and the deadly drugs which they developed. The Nazi German doctor, Josef Mengele, was the most famous among them." [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, April 17, 2011]

"Israeli doctors also carry out medical experiments on prisoners... There are prisons which fall under the military administration-in other words, [they are] directly under the army, and soldiers armed with weapons from head to toe are spread out among them. Often these soldiers shoot live ammunition at detainees; this has led to the injury and Martyr-deaths of many. These prisons are detention camps dotted with tents, with each group of tents forming a wing, surrounded on all sides by a fence and guards who are armed with weapons from head to toe. They resemble the detention camps during the Nazi period." [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, April 15, 2011]

(By Itamar Marcus, Palestinian Media Watch, May 1, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that these vicious lies come to an end and not be allowed to add to the culture of hostility that exists among Palestinians.

Scripture
"You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man" (Psalm 5:6).

6.  First International Aid to Palestinians since Reconciliation AnnouncementThe first international aid to the Palestinians, since announcement of the reconciliation agreement between Fatah and Hamas, is a US $10 million grant from the World Bank. The funding continues a program begun in 2009 that provides direct aid for needy families, so the issue of Hamas rule is sidestepped.

Meanwhile, the question of whether a unity government that includes Hamas, which is designated a terrorist organization, can receive aid from the United States or other Western nations is being debated in the various capitals. In Washington, a clear picture of bi-partisan agreement that no U.S. aid will flow to any Palestinian entity that includes Hamas is growing.

The position has been articulated by the chairwoman of the House Foreign Relations Committee and both the chairwoman and ranking member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee.
Israel has frozen US $89 million in tax revenue it transmits to the Palestinian Authority [PA] monthly pursuant to terms of the Oslo Accords citing the agreement with Hamas and insisting it will release the money only when guarantees are given that none of it will reach Hamas.

On Sunday [May 1], PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said he would turn to the international community to pressure Israel into releasing the funds.

(By The Media Line, May 2, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that no aid dollars will fall into the hands of Hamas. Pray that the international community will support Israel in their refusal to release money that may be used to support terrorist activity.

Scripture
"It is a joy for the just to do justice, but destruction will come to the workers of iniquity" (Proverbs 21:15).

7.  Anti-Semitism Lower in 2010European Jewish Congress (EJC) President Moshe Kantor said that one of the worrying growths in 2010 had been that of anti-Semitic comments made by prominent officials in Europe. Kantor was speaking on Sunday [May 1] at the release of the new annual survey by the Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Anti-Semitism and Racism and the Kantor Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry at Tel Aviv University.

The report notes that while the number of anti-Semitic incidents in 2010 was lower than in the previous year, much of this had to do with Israel's Operation Cast Lead against Hamas in the Gaza Strip in 2008 and 2009. In 2009, 1,129 incidents of anti-Semitism were documented worldwide, a record high. In 2010, that number fell to 614. Despite that decline, the 2010 figure is still the third highest since 1990.

Roughly 60% of the acts noted in the survey occurred in Britain, France or Canada. In Latin America, incidents of anti-Semitism, while amounting to a smaller percentage, have been increasing quickly, with Chile topping the list of locations in which Jewish buildings and organizations were vandalized.

Kantor pointed to the rise of what he called "respectable anti-Semitism." He said: "This form of anti-Semitism is made by prominent and respectable officials whose words are heard by millions on TV screens and the radio, in newspapers and books and on the Internet."

"Each one of these incidents was not just problematic in its own right; they each evoked terrible anti-Semitic accusations that many thought were left behind by a new Europe," Kantor said.

"That such prominent figures can evoke such anti-Semitic canards is extremely disturbing and worrying. Whereas many anti-Semites are seen as extremists who have little following and remain at the margins of society, these 'respectable anti-Semites' have power and their message resonates amongst millions.

"While freedom of speech is a cornerstone of any democracy, before even this right is surely the right to life and security and hate speech endangers both. Tolerance is also important, but there needs to be a form of 'limited tolerance,' which takes into account the demands of security."

He called for a more robust definition of anti-Semitism and implementation to protect the Jews of Europe from racial hatred. "All levels of society need to be accountable for their words and their actions. Jews cannot possibly feel safe on a continent whose prominent figures can say such things;" he continued. "If the Jews of Europe can't receive protection or respite from mainstream officials, then we are entering a very dark period," the EJC president added.

(By World Jewish Congress, May 2, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that the Lord will continue to protect His people in Israel and throughout the world from any kind of attack against them. Pray that the world not become complacent based on such figures, recognizing that 2010 was still the third highest year on record for anti-Semitic attacks.

Scripture
"Save me, O God, by Your name, and vindicate me by Your strength.  Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.  For strangers have risen up against me, and oppressors have sought after my life; they have not set God before them. Behold, God is my helper; the LORD is with those who uphold my life" (Psalm 54:1-4).

8.  Iran, Egypt Form Closer TiesIranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi spoke with his Egyptian counterpart Nabil al-Araby on Monday evening [May 2] for the first time since the uprising in Egypt. Salehi said at press conference on Tuesday that cooperation with Egypt, especially in the political arena, "will help establish stability, security and peace in the region."

He also praised Egypt for its role in the reconciliation of Fatah and Hamas. "Palestinian unity is the key factor in empowering the resistance against the Zionist enemy," he said. During their telephone chat, Salehi and Araby discussed developments in the Middle East, including the Fatah-Hamas unity agreement.

The two ministers are expected to meet at the end of the month at the Nonaligned Movement meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

In Tuesday's press conference, which took place in Doha, Qatar, Salehi said that there isn't a reason that Iran's ties with Egypt should be weaker than its ties with its other neighbors. "Currently we have good ties with all our neighbors, we have ambassadors and significant financial relationships," Salehi explained.

The two nations, which have maintained low-level diplomatic ties over the past three decades, have been growing closer since the transition of power in Egypt. It was reported recently that the Iranian government has already appointed an ambassador, although it is yet to become clear when the envoy will travel to Cairo.

The Iranian foreign minister also addressed the riots in Syria for the first time during the press conference, saying that "as long as the popular movement persists," Tehran will continue to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government's response to the "popular demands."

"According to the information that we have," he added, "there is a small group in Syria which receives outside support and is interested in creating unrest in the nation."

The United States accused Iran recently of aiding the Syrian authorities in suppressing the protests.

(By Roee Nahmias, Dudi Cohen contributed, Ynetnews, May 3, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that the Lord will have His hand on this situation, protecting Israel and the world from the growing Iranian threat as that nation uses the current Middle East unrest to spread its influence throughout the region.

Scripture
"Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace, and do not be still, O God! For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; and those who hate You have lifted up their head. They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, and consulted together against Your sheltered ones" (Psalm 83:1-3).

9.  Poll: East Jerusalem Residents Prefer Israeli CitizenshipA recent survey conducted by Pechter Middle East Polls, in partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations, ahead of the possible Palestinian bid for statehood in September, revealed that given a choice, the majority of East Jerusalem residents would prefer to remain Israelis.

The survey sampled 1,039 Palestinians living in all 19 neighborhoods of East Jerusalem, and was supervised by Dr. David Pollock. Perhaps the most striking result was regarding the residents' citizenship preference after a two-state solution is reached.

When asked if they preferred to become citizens of Palestine or remain citizens of Israel, only 30% chose Palestinian citizenship. Thirty five percent chose Israeli citizenship, and 35% declined to answer or said they didn't know.

The survey's findings were presented as part of a Tel Aviv University conference hosted by its International Conflict Resolution Program.

A similar question asked participants what they thought the majority in their neighborhood would prefer and found that 31% estimated that most people prefer Palestinian citizenship; 39% estimated that most people prefer Israeli citizenship; and 30% declined to answer or said they didn't know.

When asked if they would move to a different home inside Israel if their neighborhood became part of Palestine, 40% said they were "likely to move to Israel," and 27% said they were "likely to move to Palestine" if their neighborhood became part of Israel. Also, 44% of East Jerusalem's residents seem content with their standard of living, while 31% said they were not content with it.

The main concerns expressed by those polled were the possible loss of access to Temple Mount and concern over an uncertain financial future. When asked how a unilateral Palestinian bid for statehood would affect life in East Jerusalem, 34% said it would have a positive impact, 35% said it would have a negative impact, and 27% said it would have no impact at all.

According to the data, six months prior to the Palestinian factions' reconciliation, support for Hamas, Fatah, and the Islamic Movement in East Jerusalem was equally divided between the three [the poll was conducted in November 2010].

An important notation in the survey was that none of its participants said they supported the [physical] division of Jerusalem. The reasoning was pragmatic and centered on movement limitations such a division will cause. The margin of error given to the survey was 3%.

(Excerpts of an article by Elior Levy, Aviel Magnezi contributed, Ynetnews, May 5, 2011)

Prayer Focus
Pray that the city of Jerusalem remains the undivided capital of the Israeli state. Pray that the residents of East Jerusalem will get their wish and be allowed to remain Israelis.

Scripture
"Like birds flying about, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem. Defending, He will also deliver it; passing over, He will preserve it" (Isaiah 31:5).
