So said Machiavelli, an Italian historian, philosopher, humanist, and writer based in Florence during the Renaissance in the late 15th century.
That was almost 500 years ago; what have we learned during that time that will ensure we survive the next half millennium?
Whatever lessons we choose to take from our collective history, one thing is certain: we had better learn those lessons soon.
The impact of National Socialism (Nazism) in the Middle East used to appear brief and superficial. Unlike with Communism, whose local parties and outside influence through the Soviet bloc lasted over many decades, the Nazis' moment lasted about six years, 1939-45, and they had little regional presence beyond Rommel's armies in North Africa and a fleeting pro-Nazi regime in Iraq.
