Thousands of dunams of crops were damaged in hailstorms that accompanied the six days of rain that ended Monday, according to a report issued Tuesday by the Insurance Fund for Natural Damage to Agriculture.
Most of the damage was recorded Wednesday between the southern Mediterranean port of Ashkelon and Kiryat Malachi in the center of the country.About 2,000 dunams of open land where lettuce, cabbage, eggplant and beets are grown were damaged, as were 1,500 dunams of persimmon trees. The fund says most of the damage was caused to the skin of the fruit and to the crops grown in the open areas, the preliminary monetary figure being 10 million shekels in damage.
