` Throughout March... CFOIC is taking a look at Gush Katif   The heartbreaking story of Gush Katif is not over. Thankfully, much progress has been made and finally, after more than 5 years, we are beginning to see them settle into homes and communities and once again become successful, contributing members of society. However, there are still those who need our help. We have an opportunity to enable those people from Gush Katif who are still unemployed or underemployed, to find a job or open a new business. This program provides job training so that they can support their families with dignity. In the summer of 2005 the Gush Katif refugee families lost everything. Forcefully expelling people from their homes is a complex scenario that comes with unique social, emotional and psychological problems that require attention. Thousands of families lost their primary means of support, when their jobs or businesses were destroyed in Gush Katif, along with their homes. Municipal workers, farmers and those who owned their own businesses were left with nothing. Most of those affected are over 50, a terrible time in life to have to start over. In 2005, the unemployment rate was close to 80%. Thank G-d the unemployment rate has gone down significantly. However, many are still jobless. The Gush Katif Employment Project provides support to small business owners opening a business. This support includes grants to develop new businesses and business mentoring after the businesses have opened. To date they have assisted in the establishment of 130 businesses. In addition, the Gush Katif Employment Project assigns certified employment counselors to unemployed individuals. The counselors help their clients choose an employment direction and offer vocational retraining and job upgrading courses. Each course costs the program between $1,000 and $2,500, depending on the specific need. When possible, students are encouraged to work while attending the course. One month before the completion of the course, employment counselors begin assisting the students in their search for a job in their new field. CFOIC Heartland has been asked to help provide evacuees, with retraining programs. The Gush Katif Employment Project is requesting $50,000. Thanks to a matching program of the Israeli government, we will be able to double your contribution!
