From the Desk of Sondra Oster Baras
A Broken Reed of a Staff ...
For more than a week now, the top news story in Israel has been Egypt. The riots in the streets, the insistence that Mubarak leave office, the violence and the instability - all this has been headline news all over the world. But in Israel, these headlines have become a bit too close for comfort. Unlike the leaders of other western countries in Europe and in the US, Israeli leaders remained wisely silent. While the US hastened to side with the opposition and call upon Mubarak to leave office immediately, Israel looked cautiously at the alternatives to Mubarak. And the outlook is not pretty.
As the only democracy in the Middle East, Israel would love to see freedom and western values find expression in neighboring countries. Many believe that if our neighbors were democracies, we would not be threatened with constant war. Democracies give the people the right to choose what is best for them and what people would not choose peace over war. And when Israel looks abroad at its allies, we often wish that we had the neighborly relations of US and Canada, for example, which are not only characterized by peacefulness, but by so many shared values, language and culture.
Democracy, however, is not just about free elections. It is a commitment to a way of life which ensures freedom of speech, freedom of religion and respect for differences among people. It is a culture which seeks consensus rather than conflict and resolves disagreement by debate rather than by violence.
Free elections without an underlying commitment to freedom are a dangerous thing. Many forget that Adolf Hitler came to power through democratic means. He was elected to office democratically, but then proceeded to dissolve the legislative bodies that could have ensured real democracy. But he was cheered in the streets and welcomed by the vast majority of the German people. The Germans had voluntarily dissolved their democracy in a democratic way.

Community of the Month
This Month CFOIC is Focusing on Havot Yair...
"There is no question that that a day care center for these families is not a luxury, but a necessity! To have a place where their children will be taken care of, have fun and learn, close to home and in the safety of their own community, is absolutely priceless. As I read about the small community of Havot Yair, I could sense the energy emanating from this relatively new community. Just thinking about taking care of 77 little ones under the age of 5 makes me appreciate that I only have 3 under the age of 5 to take care of.
Please join me this month in blessing the community of Havot Yair. Your donation will help continue the building of Israel in the Promised Land!!"
Go to our website and read more in PDF about the impact that this community has on Israel.
