1. Bridges for Peace Japan Requests PrayerOur hearts have been heavy as we view the horrific events in Japan over the last week. Much prayer has been lifted to the Father from our team. Many of our friends around the world have been asking for an update from our Japan office. On Tuesday [March 15], we had our first e-mail from Atsumi Takada, our national sirector in Japan. She wrote:
"Dear Becky,
"We are thankful for your earnest prayers. Japan is currently in the middle of a disaster never experienced before. The nuclear plant in Fukushima Prefecture stopped working, a fire broke out in the thermal power generator, and Japan does not have sufficient electricity. While the nation is preparing to implement rolling blackouts, this would mean a halt to the public railway system, greatly influencing everyone across Japan. In addition, without sufficient electricity, there is a possibility of water and gas also being stopped, thus putting all lifelines on hold. The metropolitan Tokyo area is enveloped in quiet anxiety.
"At the same time, since the major earth plate in east Japan was shifted, there are many big aftershocks. Because everyone is scrambling to stock supplies in preparation for a possible disaster in the future, and because distributors are not able to function smoothly, the shelves of supermarkets and convenience stores are practically bare. While Japan is currently doing its best to remain calm, we are praying that a panic will not arise from a secondary disaster with the lifelines cut in the future.
"There are some dear people among us who are unable to contact people or have actually become victims of this disaster, and our hearts are torn. Those that have taken refuge are living without hope and need everyone's prayers. We appreciate your continued prayers for Japan.
"Personally, on the 11th [Friday], the day of the earthquake, I was scheduled for a day trip to Hokkaido [northern Japan] and back, but my return flight was stopped, and I remained in Hokkaido. There, I could not receive any e-mail or cell phone calls because apparently, the lines were tangled. And although I was able to return to Tokyo the following day, the situation was the same with my cell phone. I exchanged my cell phone just now, and am now able to receive calls. Since I do not have a fixed telephone line in my home, the only other reliable means of communication was the network of my computer, but since the office cabinets toppled over, I was unable to get my computer out and use it. This was when I realized how much I depend on the network and my cell phone.
"This is a terrible disaster. Since Hokkaido also felt the violent tremors, we realized that something terrible had happened. And the first thing I thought of was, 'Is everyone all right?' With damages spreading daily, all we can do is cry in prayers to God. Everyone's prayers will give us strength. With heartfelt thanksgiving..."
Yesterday [March 17] I talked with Atsumi, and I want to fill you in on further developments on the situation there.
Our Japan staff has now contacted most of the pastors connected with Bridges for Peace Japan. In Japan, all of the Bridges for Peace Chai Israel prayer groups are headed by pastors. From these conversations, we now know that 80–90% of our BFP Japan family are accounted for and safe. Some face significant difficulties of which we are not fully aware at this point. The pastors are reaching out to the community to meet basic needs and share the good news of God's love in the midst of this tragedy. The pastors are very tired, and we need to pray that God will give them strength.
Atsumi Takada is requesting our prayers for Japan and for BFP Japan at this time.
1. Pray for the churches and pastors as they reach out to minister to the needs of the people.
2. Of particular crisis is the shortage of food and fuel. Fuel shortages are the most critical
because without fuel, there is no way to get food and water to the devastated areas.
3. Pray for the nuclear situation to be contained. There is much fear of nuclear contamination
over wide areas of Japan.
4. Pray for the suffering people who survived the tsunami and earthquake and are now without
home, electricity, food and are suffering from the cold. About 500,000 people are in shelters.
5. Pray for the Bridges for Peace office and staff as well during this trying and fearful time.
6. Pray that the Japanese people will turn to God and we will see a great move of God there.
Less than one/half of one percent of the population is Christian.
Pray also for our ministry in Israel which is facing the possibility of reduced income from Japan over the next few months. Japan is 22% of our worldwide budget. Please pray with us that God will supply the funds to continue our ministry in Israel from other sources for the time being. In addition, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa have also faced significant natural disasters and continue to need our prayers.
We have all been reminded of the promise in Isaiah 43:1–3. Yes, we know that God will be with us as we face various trials. Please pray Psalm 91 over all of Bridges for Peace, our boards, staff, supporters, and families. "Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world."

2. Navy: Anti-ship Missiles, Farsi Manual Found on Seized VesselIsrael Defense Forces [IDF] commandoes who seized the "Victoria" vessel some 200 nautical miles [230 normal miles or 370 kilometers] off Israel's coast found 50 tons of weapons in containers that were meant to hold cotton and lentils, roughly the same amount that was found on the Karin A [a Palestinian ship seized in 2002], the army said Tuesday evening [March 15].
During a briefing on the takeover of the Gaza-bound ship, Deputy Navy Commander Rear Admiral Rani Ben-Yehuda said the Iranian ships that had crossed the Suez Canal a few weeks ago were connected to the arms smuggling attempt.
"This morning a Shayatet 13 vessel identified-some 200 miles off Israel's coast-a ship that was making its way from the Turkish port of Mersin to the Alexandria port in Egypt. The [IDF] force questioned the captain of the ship regarding the ship's destination and cargo, and following an initial examination of the vessel's route, which showed that it docked in a Turkish port and prior to that in a port in Beirut, the force asked to conduct a more thorough check of the ship. He fully cooperated," Ben-Yehuda told reporters.
"Everything was conducted in accordance with international law and the procedure pertaining to vessels that are suspected of carrying illegal cargo. The prime minister [Benjamin Netanyahu] and the defense minister [Ehud Barak] authorized the operation," he said.
According to the Navy, soldiers who searched the ship found numerous 60 and 120-millimeter mortar shells, as well as two to four Chinese-made C-704 anti-ship missiles with a 35-kilometer [22-mile] range. Had they reached Gaza, the missiles would have threatened Israeli sea-based strategic installations and navy vessels, Ben-Yehuda said.
He added that weapons were smuggled from Iran to Syria, where the ship collected them on its way to Turkey and then sailed to Egypt. Ben-Yehuda also presented a Farsi-language manual for the missiles found among the vessel's cargo, which apparently links Iran to the arms smuggling attempt. He stressed that he is convinced that neither Turkey nor Egypt knew what was hidden on the Victoria.
"This was not merely a smuggling attempt, but a clear attempt to arm the terror organizations and change the situation in the entire region," said the rear admiral.
Ben-Yehuda said the army suspects two Iranian ships, which docked in Syria's Latakia port two weeks ago, were connected to the smuggling attempt. "The containers were loaded in Latakia after the [Iranian] vessels were there," he said, adding that the ship's crew did not know it was carrying weapons.
"To say that we intercept everything that is sent to Gaza would be arrogant. This affair underscores our need to inspect ships in accordance with international law," Rear Admiral Rani Ben-Yehuda stated.

Prayer Focus
Praise God that these weapons were discovered. Pray that God will continue to favor Israel's security forces with wisdom and discernment.
Scripture
"Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory…He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God" (Psalm 98:1, 3).
3. Minister Hopes Images of Massacre Will Shock WorldThe debate over the publication of pictures from the scene of the massacre in Itamar, which include explicit pictures of the murdered children's bodies, continues: Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs Yuli Edelstein said Monday, "I want journalists and editorial staff to deal with those pictures." He added that the shocking pictures of the five murder victims [parents Ruthie and Udi and three of their six children-Yoav (11), Elad (4) and baby Hadas] may influence global public opinion.
During the debate, the minister explained why he believes the pictures should be published. "Let those who already have a fixed image of the conflict between the countries or the nations who can't seem to reach an agreement over a piece of land see the pictures of the three-month-old baby; maybe then they will understand that their image is distorted."
Explaining how he reached the decision to publish the photos the minister added: "I have often been asked why we are so sterile in the information we share. At some point, the events accumulate and though we have personally been exposed to unmentionable horrors, everyone has that point that gets them. The decision wasn't an easy one, without the family's consent we would never have even considered the issue. The family said yes-under certain conditions."
Meanwhile, in spite of unimaginable pain and grief following the loss of five family members in one murderous and brutal strike, the Ben-Yishai home in Jerusalem was filled with restraint. Here, Ruthie's parents and siblings sit shiva (seven days of mourning) side by side with the Ruthie and Udi's children: Tamar, Roi and Yishai, the only survivors in the horrific weekend attack.
Family and friends come in a never-ending stream to pay their last respects to a very special family. Three of Ruthie's brothers told Ynet of dealing with the incomprehensible loss. "We were nine siblings, now after Ruthie's murder, three more siblings join our family, Ruthie and Udi's children," one of the brothers said.
According to the siblings, their mother will now be raising the three surviving orphans. "They are the sweetest children and being able to sit Shiva with them is our greatest comfort," said Hillel, one of the brothers.
He also described Tamar, the 12-year-old daughter who discovered her parents and siblings bodies, saying: "She's like her mother, very strong. Even when the prime minister came to visit us and spoke of the Israeli response to the attack, she knew what to answer. Like Ruthie, she's made of iron. She was exposed to the horror, and she spoke of it, but she gathers her strength from retelling how she discovered her brother Roy, who survived the attack. For any person that situation is intolerable, let alone a 12-year-old," he said.
Ruthie's brother Elichai requested to send out a message: "At this time the entire Israeli nation must rise up. At yesterday's funeral, we got to witness how pain was a unifying force for the nation. Now we need to rise up beyond left and right, religious and secular. Obviously, this is a personal tragedy, but it is also a national tragedy. They were murdered because they were Jewish."

4. IDF, Settlers Save Arab Baby in ItamarAfter massacre, settlers help bring new life into world: Israel Defense Forces [IDF] and local paramedics helped save the life of a Palestinian woman and her newly born infant Wednesday [March 16] at the settlement where Fogel relatives are sitting shiva [seven-day mourning period] for the five Israelis [from the Fogel family] brutally murdered last week.
Just as IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz arrived in Neve Tzuf to offer his condolences, a Palestinian cab raced towards the community's entrance. In it, soldiers and paramedics discovered a Palestinian woman in her 20s in advanced stages of labor and facing a life-threatening situation: The umbilical cord was wrapped around the young baby girl's neck, endangering both her and her mother.
The quick action of settler paramedics and IDF troops deployed in the area saved the mother's and baby's life, prompting great excitement and emotions at the site where residents are still mourning the brutal death of five local family members.
Corporal Haim Levin, 19, an IDF paramedic, was the first medical team member at the scene and recounted the dramatic situation he faced. "When I arrived, I saw a woman covered by a blanket in a yellow Palestinian van. I moved closer and saw the baby's head and upper body," he told Ynet. "The umbilical cord was around the baby's neck; the baby was grey and didn't move."
"I first removed the cord from the neck and at the same time asked paramedics to prepare the baby resuscitation kit. I pinched her to see if she's responding, and she started to cry," he said. Paramedics also treated the mother, who was in good condition at that point, Levin said.
Meanwhile, ambulance driver Orly Shlomo raced to the scene. "We joined the military paramedic and helped him cut off the umbilical cord…without the medical treatment, the fetus and woman faced genuine life danger," she told Ynet. "It was touching, but I couldn't help but think that a few meters from there, people were sitting shiva for another baby [three months old], who was murdered," she said. "I was touched to see the face of the new baby, but I also thought about the face of the murdered baby."
Gadi Amitun, who heads the Magen David Adom team at Neve Tzuf, said this was not the first time settlers [have] assist[ed] Palestinians in distress. "They know we have a skilled medical team here, and in any case of accident or injury, they arrive and we help them," he said.
The paramedic noted that on the day of the Fogel massacre, settlers saw fireworks and celebrations in nearby Palestinian communities, but added that the local medical team is committed to assisting anyone in need. "Two years ago, we also made sure to treat a terrorist who attempted to place a bomb on the road and was shot by soldiers," he said.
Palestinians from the nearby village of Nabi Salah gathered around the paramedics along with the new grandmother and could not hide their joy. "They thanked us and told us they named the girl Jude," Corporal Levin said. "I volunteered for Magen David Adom since age 15, and it's the first time I witnessed childbirth. It was an amazing feeling to hold the girl that was just born in my arms and to know that in this complex place we did something good."

Prayer Focus
Praise God for bringing hope and a measure of redemption from this tragic incident. Pray that the nations will take note that whereas Palestinians were celebrating over an Israeli family's murder, Israelis were, without malice in their hearts, bringing forth new life for those who hate them.
Scripture
"He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will become known" (Proverbs 10:9).
5. Netanyahu: Hamas Demand Delaying Shalit DealIt appears that one of the main holdups in a potential prisoner swap for kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit is the Hamas demand that major terrorists be released from prison and be allowed into the West Bank [Judea and Samaria].
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in comments to reporters on Tuesday [March 15] that were posted on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Web site, said, "We are constantly active and are making various efforts to try and bring about the release of Gilad Shalit…The difficulty in achieving an agreement stems from the fact that Hamas insists on the release of hardcore murderers, over 100 hardcore murderers according to the security forces' definition, into Judea and Samaria."
Overall, Hamas is believed to be demanding hundreds of prisoners in exchange for Shalit. Underscoring the threat such "hardcore" terrorists would pose if released, Netanyahu went on to say that some murders have even been "perpetrated, planned and encouraged by Hamas elements from within Israeli prisons. This is what they did from inside prison, when they are very restricted.
"Releasing such a core of murderers into Judea and Samaria would allow them to perpetrate many more murders and attack Israeli citizens…In my assessment, Hamas's condition is unacceptable to me, who [is] responsible for citizens' lives. Therefore, this agreement of theirs, to what has been proposed by the German mediator [in negotiations]-this agreement is being delayed."
Shalit was kidnapped in a cross-border raid on June 25, 2006 and is being held by Hamas. Despite Shalit's being in captivity for nearly five years, Hamas has yet to allow the Red Cross to visit him. Israel and Hamas have had stretches of reported progress towards a deal, including a swap in October 2009 that exchanged Palestinian prisoners for a video proving Shalit was still alive.
In his comments on Tuesday, Netanyahu noted the challenge he faces in trying to bring Shalit home without threatening Israel's security. "We have two goals here. One is to make unceasing efforts to bring Gilad back home. The second is to defend the lives of the citizens of this country," said Netanyahu. "These two goals are before me always. This is my responsibility as prime minister."

Prayer Focus
Netanyahu carries a heavy and complex burden: wanting to free Shalit and at the same time, protect Israel from worse threat. Pray for a miraculous, God-designed solution.
Scripture
"Thus says the LORD: 'Keep justice, and do righteousness, for My salvation is about to come, and My righteousness to be revealed. Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who lays hold on it…'" (Isaiah 56:1-2a).
6. Thousands of Palestinians Demonstrate for National ReconciliationIn an unusual twist of events, thousands of Palestinians gathered to call for national unity on Tuesday [March 15] in Gaza and the West Bank [Judea and Samaria], calls generally endorsed by Hamas and Fatah, only to eventually have clashes between security forces and protestors erupt at the demonstrations.
According to the Palestinian Ma'an News Agency, massive crowds were said to have gathered in Gaza City, where it appeared the most forceful crackdown occurred. While Ma'an reported that the March 15 Coalition claimed a sizable number of Hamas forces sought to forcefully disperse the Gaza demonstrations, the exact motive for the crackdown appeared unclear.
In contrast to the clashes later in the day, Hamas premier Ismail Haniyeh, in a live broadcast on Tuesday, invited Palestinian President and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas to discuss reconciliation in Gaza, ostensibly the same call being made by protestors who were reportedly later attacked.
Deeply divided into two governments for years, Hamas and Fatah have more recently been calling for national unity and even offered suggestions towards that goal. So far neither side has moved towards the other. The political separation threatens aims for a unified Palestinian state, although their reunification could create problems with Israel and the West.
Hamas is officially boycotted by the US due to its refusal to renounce violence and recognize Israel's right to exist, while the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority [PA] receives millions of dollars each year from the US. The PA also helps Israel with counterterrorism operations against Hamas.
While the crowd size was more extensive in Gaza, Ma'an said reporters estimated that around 7,000 demonstrated on Tuesday for national unity in the West Bank, about 3,000 of those in Ramallah.
There too violence erupted, including tear gas canisters sent into the crowd from an unknown assailant in a car. While it was unclear if security forces were behind that attack, Ma'an did say that PA security forces attempted to control the protests; some isolated instances of violence injured at least 20 people. Again, the exact motive for the violence appeared unclear.
The Palestinian protests called to mind the mass demonstrations in other areas of the Arab world against their governments, although the focus for these was on reunifying the Palestinian government, not overthrowing it. Also notably absent from the Ma'an reports were any significant, explicit protests against Israel.
(By Joshua Spurlock, BFP Israel Mosaic Radio, March 16, 2011)
Prayer Focus
Pray that no matter what happens, the nations will not be fooled by appearances and deceitful words or actions that would cover up the Palestinians' goal of Israel's destruction. Pray for a populace that suffers under evil, corrupt, and unjust leadership. Pray that they will realize that God does not honor those who fight against Israel.
Scripture
"Understand, you senseless among the people; and you fools, when will you be wise?...He [God] who instructs the nations, shall He not correct, He who teaches man knowledge? The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile" (Psalm 94:8, 10-11).
7. Beirut Rally Draws "Hundreds of Thousands" Demanding Hizbullah DisarmAn overwhelming outpouring of Lebanese from throughout the country jammed the streets of Beirut on Sunday [March 13] to demand that Hizbullah disarm and to show support for the United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) [investigating the assassination of a former prime minister].
Some estimates of the turnout, ranging as high as 800,000, triggered euphoric reactions and comparisons to the Cedar Revolution of 2005 that caused Syria to pull its forces from Lebanon after a 30-year presence. The day belonged to caretaker Prime Minister Sa'ad Al-Hariri, whose government was toppled by Hizbullah over the issue of the STL.
The terrorist organization then became the power broker setting up the successor government by hand-picking the prime minister-designate. Al-Hariri was the main speaker at the event [on Sunday], which was officially called to celebrate the sixth anniversary of the founding of the March 14th coalition.
But given the massive turnout, it became the most compelling indication to date of the depth of opposition to Hizbullah's "intimidation by arms," the charge that it uses Israel as an excuse to maintain its vast arsenal but, in fact, uses the arsenal to intimidate and force its way in domestic politics. The Hizbullah arsenal also places Lebanon squarely in violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which allows only the government to bear arms.
The demonstration adds fuel to the pending confrontation that many believe will explode when the STL hands down indictments in the matter of the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Al-Hariri, Sa'ad's father. Hizbullah agents are expected to be named and Hizbullah chief Na'srallah has threatened a violent response when it happens.

Prayer Focus
In His time, God will judge Hizbullah. Pray for the 39% in Lebanon who are Christians and want to disarm Hizbullah. Pray for their safety, as they and others take a bold stand against violence and terrorism.
Scripture
"Indeed, what have you to do with Me, O Tyre and Sidon [Lebanon] and all the coasts of Philistia [Gaza]? Will you retaliate against Me? But if you retaliate against Me, swiftly and speedily I will return your retaliation upon your own head" (Joel 3:4).
8. UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Algeria Top Mideast Arms BuyersThe governments of the Middle East and North Africa dug deep into their pockets last year to stock up on weapons, according to the annual study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Experts doubt the current wave of political turmoil will do much to change that.
This year, the region's security forces have been aiming their weapons mostly at their own citizens, but during 2010, countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), as well as Morocco and Algeria, were at least as focused on external threats, SIPRI said in a report released Monday [March 14]. The price of oil rose about 14% last year to US $90 a barrel, helping governments to pay for the purchases.
"In the Middle East, we see that there are a number of countries that are investing quite heavily and have been investing quite heavily in their arsenals and weapons," Pieter Wezeman, of SIPRI's Arms Transfers Program, told The Media Line.
Based on existing orders and known procurement plans, Saudi and Moroccan arms imports are expected to rise significantly in the coming years. Saudi Arabia recorded US $1.5 billion in arms imports in the past two years, Algeria had US $1.9 billion, Turkey US $1.1 billion, UAE US $1 billion, Egypt US $855 million, and Iraq US $851 million. Israel recorded US $191 million in arms imports, SIPRI said.
The institute also estimated that Hizbullah spent US $50 million on arms imports. All told, the Middle East accounted for one-sixth of the world's arms imports while accounting for just 1/15th of the world's population. "The states of the Middle East and North Africa have been regarded as potentially lucrative markets for arms exporters thanks to the resource revenue windfall of recent years. Interstate and internal tensions provide drivers for demand as well as give cause for concern," the report said.
According to Wezeman, the impact of the current turmoil sweeping across North Arica and the Arab world on future weapons sales was unclear. "Countries which have been supplying arms will be going on with their supplies." China could serve as an alternative, but Wezeman said Western arms dealers are unlikely to step away from a good market. "Most of these countries in the West, despite their official foreign policies, despite their official arms export policies, will still be inclined to sell weapons," Wezeman said.
Iran is the notable exception. Since the June 2010 United Nations Security Council's sanctions, which include weaponry, has made it difficult for Tehran to import arms and paramilitary equipment. "This means that it is going to be the one country which isn't going to be able to buy much in terms of conventional arms," Wezeman said.
According to SIPRI, the average volume of worldwide arms transfers in 2006-10 was 24% higher than in 2001-2005. Most significantly, India has now replaced China as the world's top weapons importer, with 82% of the purchases coming from Russia. The United States remains the world's largest exporter of military equipment, accounting for 30% of global arms exports in 2006-10.
