The Muslim Brotherhood in the Arab World and Islamic Communities in Western Europe

The emblem of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan

The emblem of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan. The white circle is imprinted with the movement's militant motto: Allah is our objective, the prophet [Muhammad] is our leader, the Qur'an is our law, jihad is our way, death for the sake of Allah is our most exalted aspiration." Despite it belligerent motto, the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan has shown a great degree of pragmatism and has been an opposition the Hashemite regime can tolerate, so far even after the regional uprisings.

PA TV song accuses Israel
of fighting Palestinians in God's name

by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik

One principle of Palestinian Authority religious belief is that the Palestinians' fight against Israel is for Allah and for Islam. Accordingly, the PA presents the conflict with Israel as a fight on behalf of all Muslims to liberate what they claim is Islamic holy land. See examples below.

Now PA TV has broadcast a song accusing Israel of being the one fighting a religious war "in your name, oh God." The song demonizes Israel as an oppressor that "tortured" Palestinians and "usurped" Palestinian land, all in the name of religion.

The workers will be expected to return to Egypt to stand trial unless Eygpt decides to drop all charges against them.

The following is adapted from a lecture delivered at Hillsdale College’s Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C., on February 3, 2012.

A growing threat to our freedom of speech is the attempt to stifle religious discussion in the name of preventing “defamation of” or “insults to” religion, especially Islam. Resulting restrictions represent, in effect, a revival of blasphemy laws.
