The Israeli cabinet has approved a landmark deal for
the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who has
been held hostage in Gaza by Hamas for five years
after being kidnapped. In exchange for Gilad's
safe return, the Israeli government has agreed to
release approximately 1,000 prisoners, approximately
300 of whom had received life sentences for their
crimes. "We have concluded arduous (sic)
negotiations with Hamas to release Gilad Shalit. He
will be coming home in the next few days... [More]
To the consternation of both the Obama
administration and Israel, congressional committee
leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives have
frozen some $200 million in aid that had been
intended for the Palestinians in response to their
bid for full recognition of Palestine as a state
in the United Nations, according to a report from
Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin. The Palestinians already are embroiled in a f
inancial crisis and Saudi Arabia has announced its intention to make up
the loss, which would... [More]
Senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya says the
Shalit-for-terrorists deal proves kidnapping
works, and he promises more abductions. The
Israeli Cabinet late Tuesday night approved
freeing kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit for
1,027 terrorists and security prisoners.
Al-Hayya, a Gaza legislator and a senior
academic and political figure, told the Chinese
news agencyXinhua, "Our prisoners can only
be released through this way. The release of prisoners will lead to a
bigger victory and will break forever... [More]
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas
said that if Israel recognizes the right of Palestinians
to a state and stops all settlement activity in the
West Bank and Jerusalem, "we will immediately
go to negotiations," Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds
reported on Tuesday. Abbas's statement came as
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said he
would meet with the Palestinian president "anytime."
Abbas was speaking at a political function in Colombia,
during part a tour in South America... [More]
Speaking about Israel's pleas to the Palestinians
to restart peace talks, Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu's Spokesman Mark Regev said:
"We are ready for the immediate resumption of
peace talks without preconditions. We were ready
yesterday. We are ready today. We will be ready
tomorrow." Regev was addressing a group of German
journalists at a briefing organized by The Israel Project.
Regev mentioned that the Quartet on the Middle East
- comprised of Russia, the United... [More]
What is it about the Mideast that makes a journalist's
natural skepticism go completely awry? When
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu publicly advocates
for peace and negotiations with the Palestinians, the
default reaction of many media is to cast aspersions
on Netanyahu's intentions, effectively accusing him of
being underhanded or even untruthful. But what
happens when Palestinians make public statements of
intent that don't fit with the accepted narrative
of Israel as the obstacle... [More]
Palestinians took to the streets in Palestinian
cities from Ramallah to Jabalya in northern Gaza
o celebrate news of a prisoner swap in exchange
for captive IDF soldier Gilad Schalit. The agreement,
approved at an emergency cabinet session Tuesday
night, included the release of more than 1,000
Palestinian prisoners. Family members of prisoners fired
shots in the air in West Bank cities, celebrating in the
streets of Hebron, Nablus, and Ramallah. The revelers
were joined by Palestinians who... [More]
Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin addressed the
European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday morning,
saying that, while direct talks are important,
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas may
not be the correct address for such talks. One day
after the EU's 27 foreign ministers called for a
direct renewal of talks, Rivlin says Israel would negotiate,
but cannot give up on the demand that the Palestinians
recognize Israel as a Jewish State. "The nations of
Europe understand... [More]
