In de Tweede Kamer vond een spoeddebat plaats toen bekend werd dat in Amsterdam-West, een stadsdeel met veel islamitische bewoners, een ‘schuilsynagoge’ bestaat en dat veel instellingen – zoals joodse scholen – beveiligd moeten worden.
Het CIDI, een joodse lobbyorganisatie, telde vorig jaar 55 procent meer antisemitische incidenten (waaronder bedreiging en geweld) dan het jaar ervoor. Overigens zijn daar ook autochtone daders bij, die er vaak extreem-rechtse sympathieën op nahouden.
In Het Verval wordt dan ook een somber beeld geschetst. Zelfs op bar mitswa-feesten zijn tegenwoordig beveiligers aanwezig. Een jonge Rotterdammer hield een week lang een dagboek bij over hoe hij keer op keer wordt uitgescholden voor ‘kankerjood’.
