The Palestinians Are the Real Obstacle to Peace

When will they finally accept the Jewish people's right to their historic homeland?

The Middle East peace process is once again stalled, while Palestinian leaders sadly continue to propagate the myth that Israeli construction impedes progress. Only last Friday, Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said in Washington that "the Israeli government had a choice between settlements and peace, and they chose settlements."  

Unfortunately, what stands between the Palestinians and eventual statehood is their insincerity when it comes to real peace. Israel has repeatedly proposed the independence that the Palestinians ostensibly desire. But instead of concluding a deal with Israel, they have demonstrated a total unwillingness to compromise, often favoring terrorism, as witnessed in the barrage of terrorist attacks that followed the Camp David negotiations of 2000. Is it any wonder Israelis find it ever more difficult to trust the Palestinians?  

If there is to be a stable and lasting peace, Israel's recognition of the Palestinians' right to self-determination -- which successive Israeli governments have affirmed -- cannot go unreciprocated. The Jewish people are no less entitled to a state in their homeland, the land of Israel, or to their right to defend it.

Goodbye Sweden

Germany applies anti-Nazi laws in crackdown on Salafi Islamic groups

German police yesterday targeted two Salafi Islamic groups in what officials say is an investigation into efforts to overthrow the government.

German authorities hardened a crackdown on Islamic groups yesterday, raiding homes and schools that reportedly belong to adherents of fundamentalist Salafi Islam.

German officials said the preemptive raids, conducted under German anti-Nazi laws of association, were aimed at uncovering unconstitutional or separatist acts and not part of an international terror hunt.

The raids targeted the Islamic Cultural Center of Bremen, on the North Sea, along with a group calling itself Invitation to Paradise in two small northwest German cities. Invitation to Paradise's leader has called for sharia, or Islamic law, to prevail one day but has specifically opposed using violence to impose it.

Despite Opposition, Jewish Life Flourishes on Mt. of Olives

Construction began Wednesday on a new Jewish neighborhood in the Beit Orot yeshiva complex on the Mount of Olives. The new homes are in part of the city that fell under Jordanian control from 1948 to 1967 – what the western media often terms “east Jerusalem.”

The neighborhood will be bordered by other Jewish homes, as it is part of a chain of majority-Jewish neighborhoods that includes French Hill and the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus.

The project is starting small, with 18 homes in three three-story buildings. The homes are meant for married men learning in the yeshiva and their families and are expected to add to the growth of the campus.

Wiesenthal Center tells Jews not to travel to Sweden

Human rights organization issues travel advisory because Jews in Sweden "have been subject to anti-Semitic taunts and harassment."

  The Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Los Angeles-based human rights organization, has taken the unusual step of issuing a travel advisory about security concerns in Sweden because of growing anti-Jewish discrimination.

During a meeting on Tuesday with Sweden’s Justice Minister Beatrice Ask in Stockholm, the associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, and Dr. Shimon Samuels, who oversees the center’s International Relations department, outlined the reasons for the travel advisory.

New Yad Vashem program aims to teach Arabs about the Holocaust

Many Palestinians and Israeli Arabs see recognizing the Holocaust as tantamount to acknowledging Jewish claims to the land.

Six decades after the Nazis murdered 6 million Jews, Israel's national Holocaust memorial has launched a new effort to educate the country's Arab minority - many of whom either deny the horror or undermine its scope.

Like their Palestinian brethren in the West Bank and Gaza, many of Israel's 1.2 million Arabs resentfully view the Holocaust as the catalyst of their own suffering. While studying the Nazi genocide is mandatory in Israeli schools, there's little empathy among Arabs for its Jewish victims.

In a new project, the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial is offering seminars to Arab teachers, hoping to wrest contemporary Mideast politics from the historical events of the Holocaust.
