Who Travels to Stuttgart Enters a Foreign Country

You fly to Italy or Spain for a 14-day vacation, or you’re an exchange student for half a year in England or on a business trip to China for four weeks because the contract has been delayed, and then you come home and land at the Stuttgart-Echterdingen airport. And you catch the next street tram and look forward to being home, but this home doesn’t exist.

Next to you are sitting two dark-skinned southlanders of unknown origin and they’re carrying on in an unknown language; in front of you to the left, a Turkish young man is sitting with two female Turks and they’re chattering Turkish with little hints of German. These aren’t flight passengers, but “locals”! No tram car without any blacks headed to the main train station. At each stop, more foreigners are standing; at the university stop, you’re happy just to see Asians. You can hear and see everything – just not Swabian. You are not at home.
