Jerusalem ultra-orthodox clash with police

by  on Jul 21, 2011
Infolive.tv - Israel News - Hundreds of ultra-orthodox men waged a violent protest Saturday afternoon in Jerusalem clashing with police to protest the desecration of the Shabbat and 100 weekends since the Karta parking lot outside the Old City opened on the Jewish day of rest.

Protesters pelted police with stones and overturned garbage bins as the latter tried to stop them from blocking major intersections in the capital. Saturday's demonstration heightened the mounting tensions between the religious and secular sectors in the capital. Earlier this week six policemen were injured in a separate confrontation after they entered an ultra-orthodox neighborhood in the capital to arrest suspected tax evaders.
