Report: Iranian Ships Cross Suez Canal

by Chana Ya'ar
Iran has announced that two if its warships have already passed through the Suez Canal. The claim has yet to be confirmed by independent sources.
The two vessels are allegedly heading to the Syrian port of Latakia for training, according to Iranian officials quoted by state-run Iranian news media.

They are the Kharg, a 33,000-ton refueling and support vessel, and the Alvand, a 15,000-ton light patrol frigate. According to a statement issued last week by the Iranian navy, the Kharg carries a crew of 250 and three helicopters. The Alvand is armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.
Both were reportedly expected to enter the Suez Canal later Sunday and then the Mediterranean by Monday morning – but Iranian media broke the news that the ships had already cleared the canal by morning.
