THE husband and friends of an Iranian woman missing from Dandenong for almost a month fear she has been abducted by Muslim hardliners because of her attempts to convert Muslims to Christianity.
Mandy Ahmadi disappeared from her home on the afternoon of December 16, taking her phone but leaving her handbag, money and credit cards.
Her husband, two sons, and other relatives - including a brother released from a detention centre five days later - have heard nothing since.
The Ahmadis, themselves refugees from Iran, arrived in Australia in 1999.
Both were Muslims but Mrs Ahmadi converted to Christianity five years ago and her husband, Nathan, a year later. They co-founded an agency four years ago with the Cornerstone church in Dandenong to help refugees.
Yesterday, Mr Ahmadi struggled to voice his fears but said he was terrified and thought that abduction was the most likely cause of his wife's disappearance.
"It is so painful. My heart and my brain are frozen. I just don't know," he said.
Islam, strictly interpreted, mandates death for adults who leave the religion, and there are many cases of Iranian converts being killed, both in Iran and in Europe.

Her husband has been arrested and charged with murder. Mandy Ahmadi's body was found buried in the garden of the family home.
